This document provides an introduction to laser beam machining (LBM). LBM uses an intense, monochromatic laser beam to melt and vaporize work material. The laser beam produces a very focused, high-intensity heat source that can melt almost any known material. During LBM, the laser beam is directed at the workpiece to remove material in the desired pattern or shape. The document explains the basic principles of how a laser produces an intense coherent beam of light through stimulated emission of photons within the lasing medium.
