INCREASES STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
• A study by the The Community College reform
organization Achieve The Dream “Found that 84% of
faculty indicate that students were equally and sometimes
more engaged in courses that used OER”
• Gives all students the chance to be equally ready on day 1
of class
• Able to access their textbook anywhere on a mobile
device

MORE POSITIVES
• Casts a wide net across higher learning increasing exposure
to the educator as well as their institution
• Enables access to materials both before and After the
course
• Allows for peers to give constructive input, or update data
which raises the overall quality of the materials
• Allows for access to vast repository of educational tools
• Is available to all
DRAWBACKS
• Learning a new system
• It can be time consuming to set up properly
• Most people don’t understand the concept (including a
large section of educators)
• It is not traditional, similar to online programs, and can be
stigmatized as not ‘truly academic’
• Some students may not be able to access due to
‘information poverty’
RESPONSE TO DRAWBACKS
• The first four drawbacks are simply resistance to a new
idea. Get over it and move on.
• The only true drawback is information poverty. We need
to find ways to ensure student access this wonderful cost
effective tool. At CBC we have computers that all
students can access, all they need is a password and
login. These students just need someone to believe in
them and encourage them
