OFCOM is the Office of Communications, which regulates TV, radio, mobiles and other communication services in the UK. It monitors all communication channels to ensure nothing inappropriate is broadcast and protects viewers' privacy. OFCOM works with the Advertising Standards Authority to regulate advertising and can fine broadcasters or fire presenters if they air crude or offensive content. For example, after Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross left vulgar messages on an actor's voicemail, OFCOM fined the BBC £150,000, Brand resigned, and Ross was suspended without pay for 12 weeks.
