Danielle Duffy
Red Lights (2012)
Directed by Rodrigo Cortés
Rated 17+ for language and some violence
Genres: Drama, Mystery, Thriller
Synopsis: Psychologist Margaret Matheson and her
assistant study paranormal activity, which leads
them to investigate a world-renowned psychic who
has resurfaced years after his toughest critic
mysteriously passed away.
Plot summary: Professional skeptics (Cillian Murphy,
Sigourney Weaver) try to prove that a famous
psychic (Robert De Niro) is lying about his ability.
Introduction of narrative
It features imagery and text (of a UFO)
relating to extra terrestrials suggesting that
the narrative may is likely to include
supernatural themes.
Imagery of what appear to be the iris of an
eye, drawings of skulls and numbered
diagrams indicate that the characters are in
favour of scientific methods challenging the
unknown as there appears to be paranormal
themes in the movie.
There is a contrast between science and the
supernatural as firstly we have the
methodical imagery, then the UFO which is
considered an unknown phenomenon. This
might suggest that due to the themes of the
film there could be a conflict between
science and the paranormal. Based on the
plot summary I read online I can see how the
characters who work as skeptics (people
included to question or doubt accepted
opinions) will be trying to prove that this man
who claims to have psychic powers is a fake.
Scientific knowledge and understanding
Paranormal, beyond comprehension
Introduction of genre
Suspenseful music helps introduce the
genre as thriller. The tension in the music
rises emphasising that there is likely to be
dramatic scenes in this movie.
Typical of an opening sequence; the
movie’s title is shown. Against a plain
black background, the simple title in bold
letters; ‘Red Lights’ appears, and a series
of white and red flashes of light move
across the screen.
The camera movements during this
opening are rather jittery and the texts
jumps around and fades. This might be
reflective of the film’s violent themes.
Photographs that are revealed containing
rather obscure images are shown.
An establishing shot showing a plane flying in
to land appears to be in a city. Lights can be
seen in the image and this opening uses a lot
of circular bright beams of light relating to
the film’s title. We wonder why the director
has done this and what the importance of the
lights could be.
An empty road at night is shown as the
camera zooms blurrily as if it were a car
moving by. The dark road is lit by cats eyes,
portraying the genre as a thriller as it is likely
to be dark and suspenseful.
The only (potential) introduction of character
in this opening is an over-the-shoulder/side
shot of a man who is sat at a desk, arranging
something with this hands.
