INTRODUCTION
 Organic farming is an alternative agricultural system which
originated early in the 20th century in reaction to rapidly changing
farming practices
 Organic farming is the method of crop and livestock production
that focuses on utilizing natural material and choosing not to use
pesticides, fertilizer, genetically modified organism, antibiotics and
growth hormones
 It sustains the health of the soil, ecosystem and people
 It is the Eco-friendly agriculture that combines tradition,
innovation and science involving techniques like crop rotation,
green manure, compost and biological insect pest
ADVANTAGES OF ORGANIC
AGRICULTURE
 Promotion of biodiversity and improve ecosystem
 Reduction of the farming pollution due to chemical fertilizer,
including the toxic substances in the environment
 Grow tasty and healthy food
 Increase the health of top soil
 Create the job in community
 Minimize the impact of global warming
 Save water resources
 Stop the risk of the ground water pollution
 Low input cost
 Disease and pest resistance
DISADVANTAGES OF ORGANIC
AGRICULTURE
 It produces the much lower yield than conventional farming
which in tern decreases the availability and increases the price
 Less efficient at getting their product to the market
 Intensive care is required and is considered as tedious work
 Required lots of manpower
 Less profit
ORGANIC FARMING METHOD
1. Convert the land from conventional to organic method
2. Make sure surrounding bio-diversity and sustainability on farm
3. Produce food utilize alternative sources of nutrient
4.Crop rotation , residue management , green manures , compost ,
biological input
5.Manage weed, pest and culture of agriculture by biological control
system
6.Choose the species of plants and animal that are resistance to disease
7.Never use the genetically modified organisms
8.Grow livestock (animals and poultry ) free and pasture raised with
organic feed
DIFFICULTIES IN ORGANIC AGRICULTURE
IN NEPAL
1. Lack of organic inputs such as seeds, bio-fertilizer and bio-
pesticides
2. Lack of government initiatives, plan, policies and assistance
3. Lack of adequate information of different aspects such as
advantages of organic farming and the organic products,
crops , and area on organic cultivation , technology ,
marketing , suppliers of input , etc .
4. Organic farming is the labor intensive farming . So, in the
urban where there is a scarcity of labor, the cost of cultivation
may option to improve food security
continue

5. The misconception of the people that “organic agriculture is not a
feasible option to improve food security”
6. Awareness :there is lack of awareness about the organic farming and
the organic products amongst consumers and producers
HOW TO PROMOTE THE ORGANIC
AGRICULTURE
 Government should provide support to the organic farmers in
order to minimize the cost of mass production, subsidy must
be provided based on the volume of the production
 The policy and program should emphasize the organic food
rather than the market and the business oriented agriculture
system
 There should be the separate and the interrelated network of
training, research and the technology development,
verification and extension of organic agriculture for its
development
 There is the need of a packaged program so that a farmer can
be self equipped and prepared for the process of the
certification
 Incorporation of the courses related to the organic agriculture
in academic syllabus
TRAINING/ SUPPORT/ RESEARCH
CENTERS
 Sustainable Agriculture development program (SADP), Nepal
 Everything organic Nursery, Kavre, Nepal
 HASERA Agriculture Research and Training Center Kathmandu,
Nepal
 The Himalayan Bio-organic Agriculture Center Nepal
(HIMBOAC- NEPAL), Kathmandu , Nepal
