  Secondary Topics Term 4(2017–18) English S1 and S2 are learning how to write newspaper reports and generally looking at the influence that media has on our lives, including social media, television and fake news. They have also started shadowing the CILIP Carnegie Award. During the second half of this term they will be studying film; this will include an analysis and review of either ‘Local Hero’ or ‘Whisky Galore’ – yet to be decided. S3 are studying A Kestral for A Knave by Barry Hines. This novel is about a boy, Billy Casper, who hates and is hated by his mean family and friends. His only companion is a kestrel that he has trained from the nest. This is preparation for the National 5 Critical Reading Paper prose section. During the second half of the term S3 will be studying the musical film ‘Sunshine on Leith’ in preparation for the National 5 Critical Reading Paper film section. S4 are revising for their English exam, which includes An Inspector Calls by J B Priestly, six stories from Hieroglyphics by Ann Donovan and practice for the Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation paper. Mathematics and Numeracy P7 - S1 Transition (June)  Number – Order of operations outcome: Pupils can use a variety of methods to solve number problems in familiar contexts, clearly communicating their processes and solutions. S1  Money: Pupils can budget effectively making use of technology and other methods, to manage money and plan for future expenses.  Coordinates: Pupils can use their knowledge of the coordinate system to plot and describe the location of a point on a grid.  Symmetry: Pupils can illustrate the lines of symmetry for a range of 2D shapes and apply their understanding to create and complete symmetrical pictures and patterns.

   Volume of3D shapes: Having investigated different routes to a solution, pupils can find the area of compound 2D shapes and the volume of compound 3D objects, applying their knowledge to solve practical problems.  End of year assessment S2  Probability: Pupils can find the probability of a simple event happening and explain why the consequences of the event, as well as its probability, should be considered when making choices.  Sequences and patterns: Having explored number sequences, pupils can establish the set of numbers generated by a given rule and determine a rule for a given sequence, expressing it using appropriate notation.  Bearings: Having investigated navigation in the world, pupils can apply their understanding of bearings and scale to interpret maps and plans and create accurate plans, and scale drawings of routes and journeys.  Scale: Pupils can apply their understanding of scale when enlarging or reducing pictures and shapes, using different methods, including technology.  Formula: Pupils can create and evaluate a simple formula representing information contained in a diagram, problem or statement.  End of year assessment S3  N5 Unit 1 Expressions and Formulae- Applying algebraic skills to manipulate expressions:  Working with algebraic expressions involving expansion of brackets  Factorising an algebraic expression  Completing the square in a quadratic expression with unitary x2 coefficient  Reducing algebraic fractions to their simplest form S4 Mathematics and Numeracy  Preparation for examination

  Sciences S1 Transition (June) Gravity and the universe: By using their knowledge of the solar system and the basic needs of living things, pupils can produce a reasoned argument on the likelihood of life existing elsewhere in the universe. S1/2  Electrical Circuits: Having measured the measured the current and voltage in a series and parallel circuit, pupils can design a circuit to show the advantages of parallel circuits in everyday applications  Light lenses, magnification and beyond: By exploring the refraction of light when passed through different materials, lenses and prisms, pupils can explain how light can be used in a variety of applications.  By exploring radiations beyond the visible, pupils can describe a selected application, discussing the advantages and limitations. S3 Biology Unit 3:Life on Earth  Ecosystems  Distribution of organisms  Photosynthesis S3 Chemistry  Completion of Unit 1: Acids and Alkalis: Disassociation on water into hydrogen and hydroxide ions, pH, Neutralisation and Titration  Assessments:  End of unit one testing. National 4/5 where appropriate S4 Biology : Preparation for examination. S3 Physics This term up until the 4th June, S3 Physicists will be continuing with the unit 'Dynamics and Space', looking at acceleration and Newton's three Laws of Motion.

Coastal Environments  Processes affecting the coastline  Coastal erosion and features of coastal erosion  Coastal deposition and features of coastal deposition  Human activity along the coastline  Optional ( may also be covered in Glacial studied next Term ): - Conflicts which can arise between land uses within glacial landscapes -The management of these land use conflicts National 4 Coursework: Students will be involved in preparation work for National 4 Coursework. They will be required to choose an appropriate geographical topic that will allow research, including individual fieldwork, to be carried out. Collection of fieldwork will be required over the summer holiday.    Captured inthe Africa & Slave Factories  The Middle Passage Health and Food Technology S1 HFT This term up until the 4th June, S1 shall be looking at diets through the different stages of life, from infants through to elderly people. They will then be undertaking an assessment where they have to design a dish to meet a certain brief. They will be expected to do this independently. S2 HFT This term up until the 4th June, S2 will be looking at different types of pastry and making a range of different items including profiteroles, pasties and a puff pastry flan. S3 HFT This term up until the 4th June, S3 will be studying the organisations that help us (e.g. The Food Standards Agency) and their role in consumer protection, and technological developments in the production of food.   S3 French topics:Bien dans sa peau  Learning the parts of the body (using “à + definite article”)  Talking about sport (using “Il faut”)  Learning about healthy eating (using the future tense)  Making plans to get fit (practising the future tense) RME S1 RME topic: Personal search: the Natural World S2 RME topic: Christianity  The Church  The Bible  Beliefs in action S3 RME topic: The Holy Books Music  S1/2 – Scottish Music/Performing The S1/2 course this term will focus on Scottish Music and performing. Pupils will learn about the characteristics of Scottish Music including instrumental groupings, instrument types, dances and vocal music. Pupils will also compose a waltz in a Scottish style using a pentatonic music scale. Pupils will continue to practice their instruments on level specific pieces. Teacher input will come in the form of short discussions with the pupil and help will be given both musically and in goal setting. Although there will be no formal assessment, pupils will be expected to show improvement over the duration of this term.  S3 – Music Literacy/Performing This term the S3 class will focus on music theory and performing. They will learn National 3/4 musical concepts and be undertaking activities/exercises based on music theory from the curriculum. Pupils will also be continuing their studies in Performance. Pupils will regularly practise on two instruments and it is hoped by the end of the term pupils will be able to play pieces working toward National 5 level, with a view to consolidating this learning in S4.

  PE S1-S4 Secondary are alldoing Athletics this term:  two running events—sprinting and endurance  two jumping events—high jump and long jump  two throwing events Health and Wellbeing We are now in the final term of this academic year and in Health and Wellbeing the focus for learning will still be around the individual’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing. The programme this term will include work on: S1 and S2  Writing profiles and personal statements  Careers  Stress awareness  Sun awareness  Mental health awareness week  The festival of learning  Transition They will as always be encouraged to celebrate success and look to the future in planning their own next steps, through the use of their logs and target setting. S2 will continue to have time to build their portfolio of evidence for the Achieve programme. S3 and 4  Writing profiles and personal statements (S3)  Meningitis awareness  Careers  Stress awareness week  Sun awareness  Mental health awareness  Festival of learning They will as always be encouraged to celebrate success and look to the future in planning their own next steps using their logs and target setting. Support will also be available for the S4 group in helping them through the demands of the national 4 and 5 requirements, exam stress and strategies for dealing with this.
