Learning Targets for TODAY Participants will understand the definition of and rational behind Project Based Learning. be able to craft effective performance tasks that promote 21st century skills.
Why PBL? Our Students are Changing! Engage Me video How do we motivate 21 st Century Learners? Drive by Daniel Pink http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrkrvAUbU9Y&feature=related
What is PBL? Project Based Learning is an instructional approach built upon authentic learning activities that engage student interest and motivation. These activities are designed to answer a question or solve a problem and generally reflect the types of learning and work people do in the everyday world outside the classroom
PBL Overview Secondary Example: http://www.edutopia.org/project-learning-overview-video Elementary Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjPoHJQjtcY
2 Minute Pause What about PBL appeals to you? What are your concerns?
Attributes of Effective PBL Standards based Demands that students delve deeply into central knowledge and concepts of the discipline Students apply new knowledge to a realistic and complex problem (Authentic tasks) Requires collaboration
Attributes of Effective PBL Focuses on higher-level thinking and creative problem solving. Tasks are open-ended and often generate multiple solutions or products Allows students to gain knowledge from multiple sources Asks students to use self-management skills When possible, students present final projects to an authentic audience
Benefits of PBL Teaches students to apply their knowledge Integrates Curriculum areas Meets the needs of students with varying skill levels and learning styles Promotes a positive and collaborative classroom environment Motivates bored or indifferent students Helps students understand how what they are learning applies to life outside of school
Benefits of PBL Students learn Course content Problem solving skills Effective communication Self-management skills Collaboration skills Technology skills Higher-level thinking
What do students say about PBL? Buck Institute for Education Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZxYSe26O9I&feature=player_embedded
When do you use PBL? Not appropriate for teaching certain basic skills such are reading or computation Provides environment to apply those basic skills “ Coverage” vs. “Uncoverage” What do you want to teach in depth?
Crafting the Problem Decide which standards you want to “uncover” Ask yourself how this content is used by people in the real world or who would be interested in the information being learned Determine the scope of your project Create a task that incorporates these decisions Frame that task as a real-life scenario or problem
Project Scope Expert Panal Classroom or school Audience Multiple teachers and community members 1 teacher Partnership Extensive Limited Technology Multiple disciplines Multiple standards 1 topic 1 standard Breadth Most of the semester 5-10 days Duration Ambitious Project Small Project
Start Small
Attributes of a Well-Crafted Task Clearly connects to the standards Has a real-world application Includes an authentic audience for their work Requires higher-order thinking (Bloom’s) Is multi-disciplinary Is open-ended, allowing for multiple outcomes
