The largest crowd to ever attend a function here at Phoenix Educa-
tion came to our Halloween Party on Saturday, November 5.
More than 350 people, many of them in costumes, enjoyed the party
which included a karate display and a great musical performance by all
our Phoenix students. Everyone then had the opportunity to join in the
fun competitions and traditional Halloween games such as bobbing for
apples, cookies on a string, pumpkin bowling, and many more. Children
also got the chance to visit a ―haunted house‖ (that is if they were brave
enough) and to go ―trick or treating‖.
Our Art teacher, Mr An, and his team of helpers were kept busy all af-
ternoon painting people’s faces. The party was topped off with a great
buffet meal that was enjoyed by all.
The Phoenix Education’s Halloween Party has become one of the great
fun festivals in Hue.

NGHIA DUNG KARATE COMPETITION
2016
The competition took place on the 29th
and 30th
of October 2016 at the Sporting Event Hall at Hue University. There were
41 schools, consisting of 585 athletes, that took part in the competition, competing for 45 medals. These athletes came
from Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Ha Tinh, Da Nang, Quang Nam and Gia Lai Provinces, as well as the University of Home
Affairs and the Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sport.
Tournaments are a chance for athletes to test themselves, know who they are and how to overcome themselves. Although
the competition seems to be drastic, the main goal is not just to win a medal. The important thing is to help them under-
stand the value of life, what it is to win? What is failure and how to show respect for their opponents. These things are the
spirit of karate.
Moreover, the tournament helps them to achieve the attributes of a karate master, such as confidence, courage, determina-
tion and discipline and to show their talent with humility, respect and the spirit of karate.
Phoenix Schools’ athletes were Tyler, Shawnee, Sundance and Kiet. Tyler won a gold in the 12-14 age group and Shawnee
won gold in the 10-12 age group, in the performance rights (Katas). All of them made a great impression in the tourna-
ment and expressed a spirit of true karate.

Three Months at Phoenix
I have studied at Phoenix School for 3 months and now I will talk about what I think is
interesting about the experience.
First of all, it will be interesting for me to go to America to study. At Phoenix School,
there are many western people so I can talk to them to build up my confidence and my
communication skills. I can make a lot of friends here so I am not bored anymore. We
can talk about a lot of things on YouTube or about music and movies. Some of my
friends are troublemakers but they are still good at studying and sport.
Everything here was more interesting to me than other schools, like the swimming
pool and the basketball hoops. Usually, my friends and I go swimming if the weather
is hot. We go to the library when the weather is cold and play basketball if the weather
is not too hot and not too cold. I really enjoyed the mid- autumn festival and Hallow-
een Party this year. In the mid-autumn festival, we watched the Lion dance. At the
Halloween Party, I was in the haunted house and scared people who came in there.
At Phoenix school, I enjoy History class, ICT class, English class, science class and
Art class. In History class, I studied about the history of the USA. In ICT class, I stud-
ied about how to calculate in Excel and how to make animation. In English class, I
learn about grammar, listening skills, speaking skills and writing skills. In Science
class, we can do many cool experiments like about air pressure, some chemistry ex-
periments and more. In Art class, I can learn how to draw more beautifully using wa-
tercolors and how to make toys using some tubes or some sticks.
I really enjoy Phoenix School. I hope there are many more fun activities like field
trips, camping, science competitions or even basketball games between my school and
other schools. That will be much much more fun and help me build up my strength.
My first three months were absolutely great.

Secondary Musings
This Halloween, I watched a horror movie called “Hallo Scream - Silent Hill”.
This movie was about a girl, her name was Heather. She often had nightmares
about a place called “Silent Hill”, where her mother was trapped there with a lot
of other people. No one ever got out of that place because there were many scary
demons. One day, Heather and her father moved to a new place to live so she
had to go to a new school. On her first day, everything was ok until when the
class finished. Everyone went out of the class but Heather was the last one.
When she walked out of the class the door suddenly closed by itself. All of the
lights went off and she couldn’t see anything. She heard a sound behind her, then
she turned back and saw a big demon. It was staring at her and then it ran after
her. Heather was really scared so she ran fast to get out of the school but then
she fell down on the floor. The demon tried to kill her but luckily a few people
opened the door and came in, Heather got up but the demon was gone. When she
got home, she called her dad but he wasn’t there so she tried to look for him but
she couldn’t find him. Then she realized there was blood on the wall with a
symbol. She remembered the symbol was in her dream; it was in Silent Hill so
she decided to go there.
When she was almost there, there was the sign that said ―Welcome to Silent
Hill‖. She saw there were a lot of people there. They were all trapped. Then
there was a big black scary spider with blood on it. Heather was very worried
and the spider ran fast to catch her. A few people tried to help her but the spider
killed them and ate them. She saw a gun on the floor so she picked it up and shot
at the spider a few times and the spider exploded. Heather saved the people there
and they tried to kill the demon. It finally appeared and it was holding a big
sword. It was really fast and it killed almost half of the people there so then
Heather tried to burn it. In a few minutes, the demon was dead. She was happy
that everything was over now. She found her parents and she was very happy to
see them again. Then the three of them left Silent Hill. But then the demon came
back to life, it became bigger and stronger.

Christmas
Christmas is one of the biggest holidays all over the world. Do you know what is coming at
Christmas time who lots of kids love? It is Santa Claus. Santa Claus is from the North Pole.
He has a big factory that makes toys for good kids but not for the bad kids.
Do you know who the Santa Claus was last year at my school? It was Mr. Chris. He is one of
my favorite teachers. He teaches me English and helps me improve in English. Some people
don’t believe in Santa but I do. I know there are parents who buy toys and put them under the
Christmas tree and make the kids believe that is Santa. Christmas day is on December twenty
fifth and on that day people all over the world celebrate. At Christmas night we go to church
and my mom asks me to sing a song in front lots of people which makes me shy.
―Good kids have toys and bad kids do not have toys‖ is what my mom usually says to me on
Christmas day. It makes me try hard to be a good kid every year. At Phoenix School we usu-
ally celebrate the Christmas party before the Christmas break. We perform lots of Christmas
songs.
Before, when my grandparents were still here, we usually celebrated the Christmas party but
now they have left already so I’ll have dinner alone. That is what I hate about Christmas and I
hope next year I will not have dinner alone. That is what I wrote about in the letter sent to
Santa this year. Kiet Grade 8
Christmas
Halloween has just past and it was fun, we had lots of food, games, and performances. Some of the
games were balloon toss, bean bag toss, cookie on the string and a costume contest. We sang a few
songs at the performance like ―The Adam’s Family‖, ―The Monster Mash‖ and ―Werewolves of
London.‖ My favorite food there were the ribs, chicken and pumpkin pie. Now, I’m looking forward
to Christmas, my favorite holiday of the year.
I really like Christmas songs and the Christmas party that we have here at school. My favorite part
about the Christmas party here is selling raffle tickets and receiving prizes if you win. At the end of
the party, Santa comes with some presents and gifts for us kids. Selling raffle tickets is really fun
when I go out with my friends. After the Tet holiday, I get lucky money usually from my parents
and relatives and I always save my money to buy raffle tickets.
Usually when I win something, I have to put it back because my dad says so. I watch Christmas
shows, put up Christmas trees and then decorate them. My mom usually makes apple pie, chocolate
chip cookies and brownies. Right before we eat, we build a fire in the fire place. I get excited in the
morning when I see a bunch of presents and I can’t wait to unwrap them all. The thing I don’t like
about Christmas is taking down the decorations and Christmas tree. Halloween was a great experi-
ence and now I am really looking forward for Christmas this year and I hope it will be a good one.

Life in Vietnam
It’s rough, it’s tough, and my life has been different ever since I ever came here. I felt strange
wonders I can’t unravel. I am messy because I have very little room at home, because I have
one fourth of a closet, and a desk to put all my stuff in. The food is ok in Vietnam, but I dream
of good food every day. At school my friends are ok too, and the bad thing is that I chicken out
when I am on the tire swing when the tire is being kicked, because it hurts a little, and I’m get
scared…
At school I feel like I’m at home, in America. Mr. Chris is my main grade 5 English teacher,
because he can be fun and sometimes brutal (not really). I think he is a very good teacher com-
pared to the Vietnamese teachers. My favorite Vietnamese teacher is Mr. Vu, because he pro-
vides fun experiments and videos.
My mom is never sure if I should come back home to America, because I like Vietnam and
America the same now. Austin
Looking Forward to Christmas
I am looking forward to Christmas for many reasons. I can
set up the Christmas tree by myself, I can paint and make
decorations for the tree, and it is fun to do it with my family.
My mum buys food and cooks beef, chicken, salad, pork
chops and tomato soup. I have to write a list of presents that
I want. I chose:
- Rocket Science, Ein-o-Sci
- A big bag of marbles
- A large set of ―Modern Day‖ Legos
- An electronic bag
- A magnetic set
Every Christmas I have to put milk and cookies out for
Santa. I like Christmas the most of all holidays. It is an an-
nual festival remembering Jesus’ birthday and I respect him.
And I love eating chocolates from the advent calendar.
BJ
I Like Science
I like science because we do a lot of experiments, do
a lot of reading about science, make a lot of You-
Tube videos and even make a lot of power points.
My favorite experiment was the elephant toothpaste.
If you want to do it, first: you put hydrogen peroxide
in a container, second: you put in potassium iodine
with the hydrogen peroxide in the container and the
third step is to put soap with the hydrogen peroxide
and potassium iodine and then hot foam would
come out. If you want to change the color of the
foam, just put food color. It was so cool to me. I
hope in the future I would do more experiments.

Halloween is the festival that stu-
dents are always looking forward to
the most in the year. On Halloween,
students are transformed into the
characters that they love such as
princesses, princes, witches etc. Not
only that, at the Halloween Party
we have performances, games, deli-
cious food and visiting the Haunted
house. We are very happy at Hal-

Halloween is the festival that students like most in the year because
they have the opportunity to dress up as a prince, princess or witch
and can have their face painted to match their costume. They also
take part in interesting performances. Besides these things, they also
enjoy the buffet dinner and visiting the Haunted house. We had un-

MY FIRST HALLOWEEN
Inside Story Headline
O n e week ago was
the Halloween Party at Phoenix
Education for kids.
I was very excited because it was
my first Halloween Party. I didn't
want to be a princess or a hero. I
disguised myself as a magician
because I wanted to be both a
pretty and a scary character. The
party was very fun and exciting.
Everyone else also disguised
themselves as many scary figures.
I like my headteacher, Mr. John,
best, in his pirate costume, he
looked very cool and it made a
strong impression on everyone.
There were many things to do at
the party, such as playing mini
games, eating the buffet, playing
treat or trick game and more. I was
the winner of costume contest for
students, they gave me a surprise
present, the best thing was that.
Although the party ended one week
ago, but I’m still so happy now. It
was a good experience in my life. I
hope my school will set up many
parties like that in the future.
Happy HALLOWEEN

That will be much much more fun and help me build up my strength. My first three months were absolutely great. Bill Grade 8 Secondary Musings This Halloween, I watched a horror movie called “Hallo Scream - Silent Hill”. This movie was about a girl, her name was Heather. She often had nightmares about a place called “Silent Hill”, where her mother was trapped there with a lot of other people. No one ever got out of that place because there were many scary demons. One day, Heather and her father moved to a new place to live so she had to go to a new school. On her first day, everything was ok until when the class finished. Everyone went out of the class but Heather was the last one. When she walked out of the class the door suddenly closed by itself. All of the lights went off and she couldn’t see anything. She heard a sound behind her, then she turned back and saw a big demon. It was staring at her and then it ran after her. Heather was really scared so she ran fast to get out of the school but then she fell down on the floor. The demon tried to kill her but luckily a few people opened the door and came in, Heather got up but the demon was gone. When she got home, she called her dad but he wasn’t there so she tried to look for him but she couldn’t find him. Then she realized there was blood on the wall with a symbol. She remembered the symbol was in her dream; it was in Silent Hill so she decided to go there. When she was almost there, there was the sign that said ―Welcome to Silent Hill‖. She saw there were a lot of people there. They were all trapped. Then there was a big black scary spider with blood on it. Heather was very worried and the spider ran fast to catch her. A few people tried to help her but the spider killed them and ate them. She saw a gun on the floor so she picked it up and shot at the spider a few times and the spider exploded. Heather saved the people there and they tried to kill the demon. It finally appeared and it was holding a big sword. It was really fast and it killed almost half of the people there so then Heather tried to burn it. In a few minutes, the demon was dead. She was happy that everything was over now. She found her parents and she was very happy to see them again. Then the three of them left Silent Hill. But then the demon came back to life, it became bigger and stronger. Ngoc Grade 8

Christmas Christmas is oneof the biggest holidays all over the world. Do you know what is coming at Christmas time who lots of kids love? It is Santa Claus. Santa Claus is from the North Pole. He has a big factory that makes toys for good kids but not for the bad kids. Do you know who the Santa Claus was last year at my school? It was Mr. Chris. He is one of my favorite teachers. He teaches me English and helps me improve in English. Some people don’t believe in Santa but I do. I know there are parents who buy toys and put them under the Christmas tree and make the kids believe that is Santa. Christmas day is on December twenty fifth and on that day people all over the world celebrate. At Christmas night we go to church and my mom asks me to sing a song in front lots of people which makes me shy. ―Good kids have toys and bad kids do not have toys‖ is what my mom usually says to me on Christmas day. It makes me try hard to be a good kid every year. At Phoenix School we usu- ally celebrate the Christmas party before the Christmas break. We perform lots of Christmas songs. Before, when my grandparents were still here, we usually celebrated the Christmas party but now they have left already so I’ll have dinner alone. That is what I hate about Christmas and I hope next year I will not have dinner alone. That is what I wrote about in the letter sent to Santa this year. Kiet Grade 8 Christmas Halloween has just past and it was fun, we had lots of food, games, and performances. Some of the games were balloon toss, bean bag toss, cookie on the string and a costume contest. We sang a few songs at the performance like ―The Adam’s Family‖, ―The Monster Mash‖ and ―Werewolves of London.‖ My favorite food there were the ribs, chicken and pumpkin pie. Now, I’m looking forward to Christmas, my favorite holiday of the year. I really like Christmas songs and the Christmas party that we have here at school. My favorite part about the Christmas party here is selling raffle tickets and receiving prizes if you win. At the end of the party, Santa comes with some presents and gifts for us kids. Selling raffle tickets is really fun when I go out with my friends. After the Tet holiday, I get lucky money usually from my parents and relatives and I always save my money to buy raffle tickets. Usually when I win something, I have to put it back because my dad says so. I watch Christmas shows, put up Christmas trees and then decorate them. My mom usually makes apple pie, chocolate chip cookies and brownies. Right before we eat, we build a fire in the fire place. I get excited in the morning when I see a bunch of presents and I can’t wait to unwrap them all. The thing I don’t like about Christmas is taking down the decorations and Christmas tree. Halloween was a great experi- ence and now I am really looking forward for Christmas this year and I hope it will be a good one. Life in Vietnam It’srough, it’s tough, and my life has been different ever since I ever came here. I felt strange wonders I can’t unravel. I am messy because I have very little room at home, because I have one fourth of a closet, and a desk to put all my stuff in. The food is ok in Vietnam, but I dream of good food every day. At school my friends are ok too, and the bad thing is that I chicken out when I am on the tire swing when the tire is being kicked, because it hurts a little, and I’m get scared… At school I feel like I’m at home, in America. Mr. Chris is my main grade 5 English teacher, because he can be fun and sometimes brutal (not really). I think he is a very good teacher com- pared to the Vietnamese teachers. My favorite Vietnamese teacher is Mr. Vu, because he pro- vides fun experiments and videos. My mom is never sure if I should come back home to America, because I like Vietnam and America the same now. Austin Looking Forward to Christmas I am looking forward to Christmas for many reasons. I can set up the Christmas tree by myself, I can paint and make decorations for the tree, and it is fun to do it with my family. My mum buys food and cooks beef, chicken, salad, pork chops and tomato soup. I have to write a list of presents that I want. I chose: - Rocket Science, Ein-o-Sci - A big bag of marbles - A large set of ―Modern Day‖ Legos - An electronic bag - A magnetic set Every Christmas I have to put milk and cookies out for Santa. I like Christmas the most of all holidays. It is an an- nual festival remembering Jesus’ birthday and I respect him. And I love eating chocolates from the advent calendar. BJ I Like Science I like science because we do a lot of experiments, do a lot of reading about science, make a lot of You- Tube videos and even make a lot of power points. My favorite experiment was the elephant toothpaste. If you want to do it, first: you put hydrogen peroxide in a container, second: you put in potassium iodine with the hydrogen peroxide in the container and the third step is to put soap with the hydrogen peroxide and potassium iodine and then hot foam would come out. If you want to change the color of the foam, just put food color. It was so cool to me. I hope in the future I would do more experiments. Shawnee Grade 5 Thoughts

I was very excited because it was my first Halloween Party. I didn't want to be a princess or a hero. I disguised myself as a magician because I wanted to be both a pretty and a scary character. The party was very fun and exciting. Everyone else also disguised themselves as many scary figures. I like my headteacher, Mr. John, best, in his pirate costume, he looked very cool and it made a strong impression on everyone. There were many things to do at the party, such as playing mini games, eating the buffet, playing treat or trick game and more. I was the winner of costume contest for students, they gave me a surprise present, the best thing was that. Although the party ended one week ago, but I’m still so happy now. It was a good experience in my life. I hope my school will set up many parties like that in the future. Happy HALLOWEEN NGUYEN GIA HAN– FLYERS 2 Hello everyone!
