Heisnam Kanhailal is a renowned Indian theatre director born in 1941 in Imphal, India. He founded Kalakshetra Manipur in 1969, a theatre laboratory exploring new expressions in theatre. Through his plays from the 1960s-2000s featuring minimal expression and movement, he perfected a lyrical style conveying the grim realities of Manipur. His plays have received critical acclaim in India and abroad. Kanhailal seeks to give voice to Manipur's plight through participatory works with local actors.
