When the day of Pentecost had come,
they were all together in one place.
And suddenly there came from heaven
a noise like a violent rushing wind,
and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
And there appeared to them
tongues as of fire distributing themselves,
and they rested on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak with other tongues,
as the Spirit was giving them utterance.

Acts 2:1-4

Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem,
devout men from every nation under heaven.
And when this sound occurred,
the crowd came together, and were bewildered
because each one of them
was hearing them speak in his own language.
They were amazed and astonished, saying,
“Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
And how is it that we each hear
in our own language to which we were born?”

And they all continued in amazement
and great perplexity, saying to one another,

Part Two (verses 22-36)
God has exalted Jesus as the Messiah
The kingdom of God is on!
The day of the Lord has come!
God has done four things:
1. God presented Jesus with attesting signs — verse 22
2. God delivered Him by plan to death — verse 23
3. God raised Him from death — verses 24-32
4. God exalted Him to His right hand — verses 33-36
- He is Lord
- He is Christ

Men of Israel, listen to these words:
Jesus the Nazarene,
a man attested to you by God
with miracles and wonders and signs
which God performed through Him in your midst,
just as you yourselves know...
Acts 2:22

This man was delivered over
by the predetermined plan
and foreknowledge of God.
And you, with the help of wicked men,
put him to death by nailing him to the cross.
Acts 2:23

But God raised Him up again,
putting an end to the agony of death,
since it was impossible for Him
to be held in its power.
For David says of Him,
I saw the Lord always in front of me,
for He is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced;
my body also will live in hope,
because you will not leave my soul in Hades,
nor permit your Holy One to experience decay.
You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will make me full of joy with your presence.

Acts 2:24-28

Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding
the patriarch David that he both died and was buried,
and his tomb is with us to this day.
And so, because he was a prophet and knew that
God had sworn to him with an oath
to seat one of his descendants on his throne,
he looked ahead and spoke
of the resurrection of the Christ,
that He was neither abandoned to Hades,
nor did his body experience decay.
This Jesus God raised up again,
to which we are all witnesses.

Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God,

the promise of the Holy Spirit,

The first account I composed, Theophilus,
about all that Jesus began to do and teach,
until the day when He was taken up to heaven,
after He had by the Holy Spirit given orders
to the apostles whom He had chosen.
To these He also presented Himself
alive after His suffering,
by many convincing proofs,
appearing to them over a period of forty days
and speaking of the things
concerning the kingdom of God.

And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village
named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from
Jerusalem.

While they were talking and discussing,
Jesus Himself approached
and began traveling with them.
But their eyes were prevented
from recognizing Him.
And He said to them,
“What are these words that you are exchanging
with one another as you are walking?”
And they stood still, looking sad.

One of them, named Cleopas,
answered and said to Him,
“Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem
and unaware of the things
which have happened here in these days?”
And He said to them, “What things?”
And they said to Him,
“The things about Jesus the Nazarene,
who was a prophet mighty in deed and word
in the sight of God and all the people,
and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him
to the sentence of death, and crucified Him.
But we were hoping
that it was He who was going to redeem Israel....

And they approached the village where they were going, and He
acted as though He were going farther. But they urged Him,
saying, “Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day
is now nearly over.”
So He went in to stay with them.
When He had reclined at the table with them,
He took the bread and blessed it,
and breaking it, He began giving it to them.
Then their eyes were opened
and they recognized Him;
and He vanished from their sight.
They said to one another,
“Were not our hearts burning within us
while He was speaking to us on the road,
while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?”

“These are My words which I spoke to you
while I was still with you,
that all things which are written about Me
in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms
must be fulfilled.”
Then He opened their minds
to understand the Scriptures,

that the Christ would suffer
and rise again from the dead the third day,
and that repentance for forgiveness of sins
would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations,
beginning from Jerusalem.”

and “disciplize” [literally: disciple] all the nations,
baptizing them in the name
of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to obey
all that I commanded you;

I am with you all the days,

A Prayer for the World
May 19, 2013

Our Father in heaven,
ThankYou for loving the world so greatly.
You gaveYour only Son, Jesus Christ,
to die on the cross for our sins
so that we could be reconciled toYou.
We are grateful to callYou Father
and to be calledYour children.
Nothing can separate us fromYour love.
Thank You Father for adopting us into Your family
because of Jesus Christ our Savior

Lord Jesus Christ,
You alone are worthy to open the scrolls of history,
forYou were slain and have redeemed us to the Father byYour blood.
We confess thatYou are Head of the Church
and Lord of all heaven and earth.
May people from every tribe and language becomeYour followers
so thatYour blessing brings transformation among all peoples.
LetYour kingdom be established in every nation of the world
so that governments will rule with righteousness and justice.
And mayYour Name be great,
from the rising of the sun to its setting.
Jesus Christ,
You are the Savior of the world and the Lord of all.

Father of mercy and grace,
We acknowledge that we have sinned
and that our world is gripped by the power of sin.
Our hearts are grieved by injustice, hatred and violence.
We are shamed by oppression, racism and bloodshed in our land.
We mourn all loss of life in murder, war, and terrorism.
Our homes are broken and our churches are divided
by rebellion and pride.
Our lives are polluted by selfishness, greed, idolatry and sexual sin.
We have grievedYour heart and brought shame toYour Name.
Have mercy on us as we repent with all our hearts.
God of mercy, forgive our sins.
! Pour out Your grace and heal our land.

Spirit of the living God,
Apart fromYou, we can do nothing.
TransformYour Church into the image of Jesus Christ.
ReleaseYour power to bring healing to the sick,
freedom to the oppressed and comfort to those who mourn.
PourYour love into our hearts and fill us with compassion
to answer the call of the homeless and the hungry
and to enfold orphans, widows and the elderly inYour care.
Give us wisdom and insight
for the complex problems we face today.
Help us to use the resources of the earth for the well-being of all.
Holy Spirit, we need Your comfort and guidance.
! Transform our hearts.

Lord Jesus Christ,
BecauseYou were dead, but are now risen,
and the Father has givenYou a Name above all names,
You will defeat all powers of evil.
Tear down strongholds and ideologies
that resist the knowledge of God.
Remove the veil of darkness that covers the peoples.
Restrain the evil that promotes violence and death.
Bring deliverance from demonic oppression.
Break the hold of slavery, tyranny and disease.
Fill us with courage to preachYour word fearlessly,
and to intercede for the lost faithfully.
Almighty God, deliver us from evil.

King of Glory,
Come and finishYour work in our cities,
our peoples and our nations.
We lift our voices in unison with believers
from Africa and Asia,
from the Middle East and Europe,
from North and South America,
and from Australia and the Pacific Islands—together we cry:
Lift up your heads, O you gates!
Be lifted up ancient doors
so that the King of glory may come in!

AsYour deeds increase throughout the earth,
and asYour blessings abound to all the nations,
they will seekYou, asking,
“Who is this King of glory?”
Together we will answer:
He is the Lord Almighty!
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!
Come fill the earth withYour glory
as the waters cover the sea.
The Spirit and the Bride say:
Amen! Come Lord Jesus!
