Phenol Formaldehyde Resin
is specially formulated for ablative
applications. These are synthetic
polymers by the reaction of phenol or
substituted phenol with
formaldehyde. Phenolic resin is ideal
for production of circuit boards,
laboratory counterparts, pool balls
and as adhesives and coatings.
These resins possesses 60-65% solid
content and solvent is ethanol. The
resin is extensively demanded for
manufacturing prepregs based on
carbon fabric that is broadly used in
diverse aerospace, space and
defense applications. These resins
are available in pale cream and
brown (light & dark) colors.
Based on production,
phenol formaldehyde
resins can be categorized
into two types. These are
called Novolacs and
Resoles. Novolac resins
are produced under acidic
condition with excess
phenol, while resol resins
are produced under basic
conditions with excess
formaldehyde. Novolacs
are phenol-formaldehyde
resin with a formaldehyde
to phenol molar ratio of
less than one.
