The document describes an experiment to synthesize phenytoin from benzil using microwave irradiation. Benzil, urea, sodium hydroxide, and methanol were combined and irradiated for 3 minutes using a microwave oven. This led to the formation of an intermediate product pinnacol, which then rearranged in the presence of sodium hydroxide to produce phenytoin sodium salt. Phenytoin was isolated as the crude product and recrystallized. The percentage yield of phenytoin was calculated and reported.
