Indigenous people are the original inhabitants of a particular territory and have historically resisted colonization and assimilation, differentiating them culturally from other groups. They are recognized legally under the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act in the Philippines. While similar, indigenous people are distinguished from ethnic groups by their ancestral origins and continuity in a territory as well as their cultural distinctiveness from mainstream society.
