Unit G321 – Foundation Portfolio in Media – Photo-shoot Plan
Project title: BUZZ
Project: Creating Music Magazine
Project Description: During this project I will create a top quality and
‘informative’ (Katz) hip-hop magazine that will possess a typical hip-hop theme
within the magazine. This will include hip hop related images, a specific colour
scheme of black and yellow and relevant storylines that relate to current and
future artists in the music industry. My target demographic will aim at those of
an African American background due to the fact that hip hop is highly popular
amongst those of this background. These features will reach out to my target
audience as I will ensure that my magazine is as relevant to the genre as possible,
this proves to be popular as both XXL magazine and Vibe both aim their
magazines at African Americans and are both successful in doing so.
Photographer:
For my hip-hop magazine I have undertaken the role of photographer and will be
specifically looking at a medium close up (MCU) for my cover star who will
feature on the front cover of BUZZ as a medium close up connotes the
importance of the star as he or she is being presented at a visible angle. The
image will need to be large enough to overlap the masthead and consume
importance over every other feature. This shot is the most popular for magazine
cover stars as it denotes ‘star appeal’ (Richard Dyer). As photographer I will also
apply a darker tone to my images as black and white are key for the genre due to
the fact that although hip hop is vibrant and upbeat it also has a criminal and
mysterious side to it therefore a darker tone will inflict mystery and excitement
upon all readers. However my double page spread will be in colour allowing the
audience to become familiar with my cover star.
Reasons behind the title inside this box (connotations):
I have decided to name my chosen hip-hop magazine ‘BUZZ’ due to the fact that
during my primary research I created a survey that allowed me to explore
opinions from other people. During this survey BUZZ was the most popular of
three options, this had a massive input on my final decision. In addition the title
BUZZ creates a vibrant and upbeat feeling completely matching the genre of hip-
hop, as it is loud, upbeat and current. My chosen masthead title has a direct link
with the genre and was rather popular with others therefore BUZZ has every
purpose and reason to emerge as my chosen magazine title.
Unit G321 – Foundation Portfolio in Media – Photo-shoot Plan
Casting:
At this moment in time I have two candidates for who will be able to feature in
my magazine as my cover star and main headline artist. One of them being
Michael in Year 9 (option 1) who has similar facial features and hairstyle to
rapper Kendrick Lamar who has featured on music magazines on multiple
occasions. Michael has an African American background and will be a prime
candidate for a cover star due to this look.
Furthermore, the second candidate for my headline and cover star is Jack
Sharpling in Year 12 (option 2) who is three years older than Michael therefore
is most likely to be more suitable as an older looking rap artist. Jack dresses like
a hip hop artist and denotes star appeal to the audience therefore is most likely
to feature on my hip hop magazine.
Model requirements:
 For my hip-hop magazine both of these models must have a resemblance
to an artist such as Drake as he dresses like a hip hop star and is wearing
a cap and chain which are both key factors for a hip-hop artist in order to
look current and to match their outrageous genre.
 They must have cool look in order to match the cool features and
appearance of a hip-hop star and must be open to certain poses that
denote attitude and a hip hop vibe.
Wardrobe and Look:
 For my hip-hop magazine I will provide my chosen cover star with many clothing items
that are relevant and useful to the hip-hop genre such as a basketball, ray ban shades
and golden chains which all symbolizethe hip hop lifestyle. My cover star must also have
a similar hairstyle to Kendrick Lamar or other existing hip-hop stars. However this is not
key as the cover star will be wearing a snapback cap. The cover star should be wearing

well known hip hop brands to inspire the younger generation such as Palace, Nike and
many more brands that are seen as cool, current and well known.
My images will involve a star with a hip hop appearance in order to denote
relevance and to inflict star appeal to the audience. This builds a relationship
between the audience and the magazine as my audience admires the artist as he
is dressed in current clothing and is wearing key hi[p hop accessories. This
image will appear in black and white image as it will draw out other colours in
the magazine such as the cover lines and masthead which are all crucial in a
magazine and are generally completely dominated by images removing brand
identity. This is my first issue therefore as a new magazine it is crucial to build
brand identity which attracts customers and the popularity of my magazine.
Where:
My cover star shoot will take place in a quiet area against a brick all therefore
when it comes to editing I will be able to crop the image a quickly as possible.
When: This will take place during the day as my cover star will be able to stand
out on camera and the colour contrast will increase his star appeal.
This image will be used on my
first issue of ‘BUZZ’ as it is a
stereotypical hip-hop artists
accessory. M target group is the
group of African Americans who
are huge fans of basketball in
general therefore this image is
well suited to my genre and
appeals to my target group at the
same time.
I will most probably place this
image either on my contents page
or somewhere in my double page
spread; the image will be rather
small due to the fact that it lacks
importance and is irrelevant to
music however displays the hip-
hop life style which may inspire
my target audience.
This image of a golden chain has been put into
place in order to denote the expensive and
complex lifestyle of a hip-hop artist. This chain
has given me a great deal of inspiration as it
denotes star appeal and value to the magazine
itself and due to this chain being an item of
luxury it gets readers caught up into the hip-
hop lifestyle creating almost an obsession with
my magazine. This could also be used as an
item of promotion or a giveaway prize in the
first issue of ‘BUZZ’ therefore I am allowing fans
of hip-hop to become their idols through the
prize creating a sense of excitement for all
viewers.
