The inner planets of the Solar System are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. They are smaller and rockier than the outer planets, and are located closer to the Sun. Mercury is the smallest planet and orbits the Sun the fastest of the inner planets. Venus is similar in size to Earth but has an extremely hot surface temperature. Earth is the only known planet capable of supporting life. Mars has signs of ancient water on its surface and is currently being studied extensively by orbiters and rovers.
