OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
• Identify examples of how religion influences individuals and
society.
• Discuss the positive and negative effects of religion in different
contexts.
• Demonstrate open-mindedness and critical thinking in analyzing
religious issues.
• Reflect on how religion can be used to promote peace and
understanding.
Introduction
• Religion has played a significant role in
shaping human civilizations, cultures, values,
and personal beliefs. It has both positive and
negative effects on individuals and societies.
Positive Effects of Religion
1. Moral Guidance and Ethical Living
- Religion teaches values like honesty, kindness, compassion, and respect.
2. Sense of Community and Belonging
- Brings people together through worship, festivals, and rituals.
3. Hope and Comfort in Difficult Times
- Faith provides emotional and spiritual support.
4. Charity and Social Services
- Promotes helping the less fortunate through various programs.
5. Cultural Identity and Preservation
- Preserves traditions, arts, music, and languages.
Negative Effects of Religion
1. Religious Conflicts and Wars
- Differences in beliefs have led to violence and persecution.
2. Discrimination and Intolerance
- Exclusion or prejudice against those with different beliefs.
3. Suppression of Individual Rights
- Used to justify limiting rights of women, LGBTQ+, and others.
4. Resistance to Change
- Opposition to scientific discoveries or social reforms.
5. Manipulation and Exploitation
- Misuse of religion for control or political gain.
Conclusion
• Religion has the power to inspire peace, love,
and social harmony, but it can also contribute
to conflict and division when misused. It is
important to approach religious belief with
respect, understanding, and critical thinking to
appreciate its role in both personal and social
development.
