Why it is important to teach PDHPE?
 PDHPE promotes the overall well- being of students, active
lifestyle, safe living, growth and development, personal
health choices, and interpersonal relationship. PDHPE
equips communities to encourage better health for all. It is a
essential learning area within the primary curriculum, as it
“encourages an understanding and valuing of self and others
and emphasizes informed decision making leading to
effective and responsible action.
 PDHPE encourages an understanding and values
of self and others :
 Students who understand and value themselves as individuals
and as members of a groups, exercise more control over their
own lives. They can identify and express a number of feelings,
and appreciate that the way they think influences how they feel.
When students understand and value others, they work more
cooperatively in teams and enjoy more stable and satisfying
interpersonal relationships.
PDHPE is primarily concerned
with the following

Student’s physical, social, cognitive and emotional growth and development patterns.



The factors influencing personal health choices.



Living and learning in a safe secure environment.

Skills enable action for better health and movement outcomes.


The adoption of an active lifestyle.

 As children grow and develop they become increasingly aware of the
importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. PDHPE teaches children how
to make healthy lifestyle choices that ultimately help them experience
positive relationships, improved quality of life and less illness. It aims
to engage students in developing skills beyond numeracy and literacy. It
is not about physical health it is about a good mental health too! The
warm – up and invasion games are essential as they enable children to
develop a lot of skills like communication, decision making, problem
solving, interacting, moving, and - Decision making, the warm up and
invasion games in PE teach kids new skills and improve old ones . Also
movement help prevent diseases such as obesity which may lead to
diabetes.
 PDHPE promotes lifelong involvement in physical
activity: regular physical activity is an essential ingredient for the
development and maintenance of optimum health. It can improve
cardiovascular efficiency and aid efforts to reduce risk factors of
coronary heart disease. It is critical for enhancing bone development,
controlling obesity, and improving psychological health and immune
status. Physical activity is also important in contributing to quality of
life. Participation in active pursuits can be enjoyable, creative and social
outlet that has the potential to build self esteem.
