This document summarizes information about journal bearings. It defines a journal bearing as a block of cast iron with a hole for supporting a rotating shaft. It describes how lubricating oil is fed into the bearing and dragged by the shaft, creating hydrodynamic lift and resisting shaft motion. There are three types of journal bearings: dry, hydrodynamic, and hydrostatic. The document discusses the pressure distribution in a journal bearing due to the flow of viscous fluid in a converging channel, and defines the eccentricity ratio as the ratio of eccentricity to radial clearance. It concludes with discussing the study of bearing functions and types, and viewing the pressure distribution curve of a journal bearing.
Introduces journal bearings, their function in reducing friction, and their construction.
Describes the operational mechanism, types of journal bearings, and pressure distribution in bearings.Discusses how pressure builds in bearings during operation and defines the eccentricity ratio.
Summarizes the study of journal bearings, their types, functionality, and pressure distribution analysis.

TOPIC : To plot pressure distribution curves on journal bearing
2.
INTRODUCTION
A bearing isa machine element that constraints relative motion to
only the desired motion.
Reduces friction between the moving parts.
Bearings provide support to the rotating shaft .
Bearings are provided with some lubrication to
reduce friction.
3.
JOURNAL BEARING
Itis simply a block of cast iron with a
hole for the shaft providing running
fit.
Oil hole is drilled at the top for
lubrication.
4.
JOURNAL BEARING:: Usedto support the load on a rotating shaft.
OIL INLET ::Used to insert oil /lubrication
As lubricating oil is feed into the bearing and is dragged by the shaft
into the converging gap , the fluid pressure increases and a
hydrodynamic lift is created.
DISADVANTAGES OF JOURNAL
BEARING
Thereis no provision for wear and adjustment on account of wear.
The shaft must be passed into the bearing axially i.e. endwise.
ADVANTAGES OF JOURNAL BEARING
It can handle high loads and velocities (less metal to metal contact due to oil
film ).
Long lasting and durable.
Quiet and smooth running of engine.
Low cost
Suitable only for low temperatures and speed
Requires large supply of lubrication
9.
PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION
Apressure is built up in clearance space when
the journal or shaft is rotating about an
axis(eccentric to bearing axis) and lubricant is
supplied to the bearing.
This pressure will resist the motion of the
shaft or journal.
Arise due to flow of viscous fluid in
converging channel.
CONCLUSION
WE , studiedabout the bearing ,its
functions. WE further studied about
the journal bearing , its, various types
and also saw the pressure distribution
curve of journal bearing.
