INTRODUCTION :
 Medicines & consumables received & accepted by
pharmacy shall be taken up for storage at the
respective areas.
 All freshly accepted medicines & consumables
shall be allocated.
 All movements of medicines & consumables( entry
& exit) shall be immediately updated in the
computerized ledger.

 Maintaining proper storage conditions for health
commodities is vital to ensuring their quality.
 Product expiration date are based on ideal storage
conditions and protecting product quality until
their expiration is important for serving customer
and conserving resource .
 Storage & prevention of medicines & consumables
shall be in order & easy-to-indentify manner so
that easy retrieval is facilitated.
 All medicines & consumables are kept at designated
place; as categories then alphabetically.

drug storage steps :
proper Drug storage:
Drugs are stored in a specially designed secure area of
the building in order to :
 Avoid Contamination and deterioration.
 Avoid disfiguration of tablet.
 Maintain integrity of packaging and so guarantee
quality and potency of drug during shelf life.
 prevent or reduce pilferage, theft and losses.
 Prevent infestation of pests and vermin.
 The storage should not hinder the cleaning and should
have sufficient space for movement of stocks and
handling.
 Products are to be stored in manner that prevents
damage due to excessive vertical stacks heights.
 Store the products as per storage condition (As per
label).
 Monitor and record the temperature of storage area on
daily basis.
STORAGE ENVIRONMENT :
The storage environment should posses the following :
 Adequate temperature :
i) In a Deep Freeze : -15ᵒC
ii) In a refrigerator : 2ᵒC-8ᵒC
iii) Room temperature : 15ᵒC-25ᵒC
 Sufficient lightening.
 Clean condition.
 Humidity control.
 cold storage facilities.
 Adequate shelving to ensure integrity of the stored
drugs.
Storage PREMISES :
 The storage area must free from unsanitary
condition (Ex-Rodents, insects, birds and litter
etc.)
 The floor of warehouse should be made of hard
floor and must be good state of repair.
 The floors are kept clean and free of trash, dirt,
seepage water and drain water etc.
 The area used for storage of IV fluids should have
adequate space and to prevent exposure to direct
sunlight.
 Secured area availability for damage, rejected
and expired goods.
 Ensure adequate pest control programme in
place.
 The pest shall cover treatment for termite and
rodents.
Arrange of drug ON SHELVES :
 Shelves should be made of steel or treated wood.
 Shelves should be strong.
 All medicines & consumables are arranged at
designated place; as categories then alphabetically.
 Sufficient empty space should demarcate one drug
or dosage form from another.
 Most recently received drugs are placed behind old
stock on the shelf except where new drugs have
shorter expiration dates.
 Put drugs in a dry place protected from light and
heat.
 Store liquid on the lowest shelf.
 The store must be cleaned daily and mopped at least
once a week.
THE STOREROOM:
 A well-arranged store enables easy identification of
drugs and saves time when picking a drug from the
shelves.
 This helps remove drugs quickly and makes for easy
inventory control.
 The rule of FIRST EXPIRY FIRST OUT (FEFO) should
be applied always.
 To have access to drugs with shorter expiration dates
first, put these in front of the shelves and with longer
expiration dates should be placed behind those with
shorter date.
STORAGEOF CONTROLLEDdrug:
 All controlled drugs (Narcotics & psychotropic)
should be stored only in the approved cabinets.
 The Cabinet should be double locked container.
 The keys of the cabinet must be in possession of
authorised person.
Storageof high-alert and emgdrugs:
 All high-alert and emergency drugs are stored at
designated place.
 All injection dosage form of high-alert & emergency
drugs are stored by alphabetically except fridge
items and tablet dosage form with stickering of
HIGH-ALERT, EMERGENCY and LASA.
 All Tablet of high-alert and emg drugs are stored in
tablet store box by stickering of HIGH-ALERT,
EMERGENCY and LASA.
 Also same as fridge items.
THE DISPENSARY:
 Clear after each use tablet counters.
 Don’t arrange drugs on the dispensary counters.
STORAGE,MAINTAINANCE& SECURITY:
 All drugs, including sample, should be maintained
separate from non-medications in a locked cabinets
which is sufficiently secure to deny access to
unauthorised persons.
 Key should be available only authorised personnel
who are assigned medication-related responsibility.
 Store Look-alike & Sound-alike drugs separately.
 Store medication that are “ for external use only’’
separate from medication intended “for internal
use’’.
