DEFINITION OF TERMS
1. CHARACTER is the person, animals or
anything taking part in a narrative.
 Protagonist is the main character in a
story.
 Antagonist is the opposing character.
2. CHARACTERIZATION is the information the
author provides you about the character.
 Direct Characterization
The writer tells you directly what a
character is like.
 Indirect Characterization
The writer allows you to make your own
judgement about the characterization of
the character.
3. SETTING is the time and place in which
a story takes place. It involves:

 Social Condition
 Mood or Atmosphere
4. CONFLICT is the problem in a story.
 External Conflict
One character in conflict with another
character, a group or a whole society, or
nature.

It involves a problem in making decision,

author’s message. It is not usually stated
directly.
6. PLOT is the series of related events in a
