Prelim music video analysis
How professional is it?
The majority of the music video was, in my opinion
quite professional looking, however, some
aspects of it could’ve been better.
We put a significant amount of effort into the
costume, considering that hardly any of us own
an item of pink clothing so we substituted this by
using pale clothing and childlike hairstyles. An
example is Ellie’s.
The video itself is shot, in my opinion, to look fairly
professional, my favourite shot being the pan
through the corridor. Other shots, including the
close up Chloe did of me looked more
professional because she focused the camera
very well and kept it steady using the tripod.
What are the short comings?
Overall, there are few negatives I could discuss when looking
at the final product because I think we worked very hard to
achieve what we did, however, a few shots and certain
aspects do stand out to me when questioning how
professional the final video looks.
For an example, the corridor shot which Megan filmed and
we all agreed that although it was very well done, the only
problem was that the shot jittered as she walked with the
handheld camera. This could perhaps have been edited
with the ‘anti shake’ tool in Adobe (as I discovered later
through more research) however, we did not think of it at
the time of editing so I am sure to use it for my own music
video if needs be.
The only other fault which significantly affects how
professional the music video looks, is the set which is not a
replica of the set in the music video since we had to make-
do with the classrooms and space that we had.
Evaluation of Process
How useful was it?
What have you learnt?
What problems did you encounter and how would you
rectify them?
How useful was it?
 I got an insight into the stress of taking shots.
 The majority of music videos I have looked at have an average time of one second per shot. I
will have to keep the camera moving as I do not have access to more than one camera at a
time, therefore, I must stay organised in moving equipment so that I do not stress myself out in
getting positions right etc.
 Taking time
 During this process, I have learnt that it is vital to take your time while filming. Trying to achieve
things quickly may result in bad footage and the need for re-takes. Taking one’s time means that
less re-takes are needed and the cast will remain patient.
 Taking re-takes if necessary
 When we were unsure about a certain shot, regardless of how the preview was on the camera,
we took another shot. It is always best to stay safe than having to organise a re-shoot.
 Going with your gut instinct is also primarily important with this- if it is felt that a shot is wrong,
re-take it. DO NOT pass it off as “It’ll be alright”. We did this with Vicky’s shot where she looks at
the camera and we only filmed one shot.
 It is time consuming.
 I think we underestimated how much effort we had to put into the making of the music video but
because of this reason, I think the prelim task was very useful as I now know exactly how
professional my final product will look if I put this amount of effort in.
 Overall, the process was very useful as I think that we all learnt how different it was to
soot a music video than a thriller opening sequence and that while some skills can be
transferred, it is a completely different world.
 Like with any art form, cinematography is a skill developed and I think that this prelim tasks was
one of the first steps to me being able to achieve a professional looking music video by the end
of this course.
What have you learnt?
I mentioned some aspects in the previous slide so I
will bullet point them here:
 It is vital to take your time while filming.
 I must stay organised in moving equipment so that I
do not stress myself out in getting positions right etc.
 DO NOT pass shots off as “It’ll be alright”.
 It is time consuming.
If I keep in mind the above statements and put the
required effort into planning, filming and editing, I
should have no problem with producing a professional
looking music video.
What problems did you encounter
and how would you rectify them?
We did not encounter into any problems while filming as
such, however, there were problems which were beyond
our control such as the space we had to use, the actors
that were available etc.
One of the main problems was getting costume. Hardly any
of us own an item of pink clothing so we substituted this by
using pale clothing and childlike hairstyles.
I was also lucky enough to own a basketball jacket
somewhat like Jessie’s. This is probably the most
recognisable part of her costume so not having a wig
probably rectified this and the presentation of her.
During the editing process, we also realised that we did not
add a fade in from black (and also that our establishing
shot was too short) which stopped us from synching the
entire music video as the original started later than ours.
We solved this by trimming the beginning of the original
music video, and lengthening the shot of the school as
