PRESENTING MY
SURVEY DATA
What is your age?
This piece of data was
really important to me
because I wanted to make
sure that the age for my
target audience was right.
The fact that there are lots
of people at the age of 16-
18 is a really positive sign
as well as the next piece
of data…
What is your gender?
This piece of data is equally as
important because it shows that
the audience I'm looking to
appeal my magazine to is girls
as 60% of the people who took
my survey were female.
Your opinion on folk music?
These results are really
promising because it shows
that actually a lot of people do
actually like folk music so I
have a wide audience to get
my magazine out to. This also
links with my target audience
as this shows a lot of younger
people such as the 16-18
year old category like folk
music. Only 9.09% of people
said they really don’t like it so
therefore at least 90. 91% of
people think it is tolerable if
not good or great
What do you associate most with folk
music?
• When looking through the results of my survey at this
question, there were some recurring ideas that just kept
coming and coming. The most highly scored thing that
people associated with folk music was the instruments,
having 14 out of the 62 responses being this. Other
features that occurred commonly were festivals and
stereotypical looks of the musicians as well as location
and dancing.
• Things that only a few people associated with folk music
is age and emotion so these aren’t things I have to
include although I would still like it to appeal to certain
ages and convey certain emotions
What do you expect to find in a music
magazine?
• The most commonly said answer was the latest news on bands
with 20 out of the 63 responses saying that this is what they
expect.
• Some other high scoring ideas are the latest events which was
suggested 17 times as well as images of the bands which link
to the article which scored 16.
• However what was also apparent is that quite a large number
of people didn’t know what to expect from a music magazine
because they have never bought one. This is due to the latest
technology in some peoples eyes making magazines pointless.
7 people had said that they don’t know what they would find
within a magazine
• (Some people suggested more than one item)
What draws you in to buying a magazine?
It is clear by looking at these results
that the front image is a large part of
why people want to buy a magazine
so I know this is something I am really
going to work on as 54% of people
said this is the main reason . Also
people want to see their favourite
bands appear on the front page as
about 47% of the people wanted to
see their favourite bands.
Some of the answers within the
“Other” section consisted of a low
price or a clear layout so it is easy to
find the pages you want. It is also
clear that on a music magazine,
“Special offers” aren’t very important
and doesn’t need to be within my
magazine
The percentages don’t really add up
and this is because I allowed the
people to put more than one answer
What colours would you expect to see?
By looking at these results, it is
clear to see that a lot of people
preferred to see bright colours as
this links with the social context of
the folk genre and society. The
most popular colour was orange
with 55% of people saying that
this colour is most fitting.
Not as many people chose black
because it doesn’t suit the style as
folk is a lively thing and needs to
be bright and in your face.
What form would you want a music
magazine to be?
By looking at these results, it is clear which way the majority of people are
going. With 56 out of 66 people saying informal is the way to go, that
statistic is hard to ignore. This could be because the social group that listen
to folk are usually working class so look for entertainment more than
education which the informal style fits perfectly.
What do you read magazines for?
• By looking at the results of this question, it is clear that
many people read magazines for entertainment and
leisure as they pass the time whilst doing something. In
fact, 47 of the 60 people who answered this question said
that this is why they read it.
• However, as the answers had multiple points a lot of
people also wanted a music magazine where you find
news about certain things. Whether that be the bands in it
or locations for the next gig.
What font would you like to see in a folk
magazine?
• 92% of people suggested using Arial as the font because
it is clear to see from a reasonable distance so you don’t
have to strain your eyes to try and enjoy your reading
time.
• 20% of people said that the letters should be spaced a
little bit wider than a usual magazine so it is easier to read
• 5% of people wanted comic sans as the font (I don’t think
I will be following through with this idea as these results
are from the more elderly age bracket so isn’t within my
target)
