Imagine this! A Rotarian led decade of
Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the
Children of the World
A culture of peace is…
preventing violence and violent conflicts
…based on education for peace, the
promotion of sustainable economic and social
development, respect for human rights, equality
between women and men, democratic
participation, tolerance, the free flow of
information and disarmament.

thousands of women and men to be village
protectors and peace monitors

$50,000 could provide a first online
course in UCP for 90 Rotary Peace
Fellows and related professionals
with Nonviolent Peaceforce and the

Editor's Notes

  • #3 If Rotarians were to start seeing peace and nonviolence as vocational training, there is no lack of models, standards, and curricula. They ranger from international standards for human and environmental rights, curricula for peaceful parenting parenting and teaching, training for youth, guidelines for Rotarians 4 way test and for community members Oshkosh Civilian Project. Model practices for community discussions, and
  • #4 But programs to directly protect civilians in areas of violent conflict is quite another matter. If you add up all the programs to protect civilians from violent conflict, it’s not even close to meeting the need.
  • #8 Violent conflict prevention/deterence
  • #9 Direct protection of civilians from physical harm
  • #10 2 Global UN studies and cited and recommended UCP
  • #11 Vocational training for professional unarmed civilian protectors. Global grants could underwrite the vocational training for professional unarmed civilian protectors around the world.
  • #13 When there is armed conflict, volunteer ceasefire monitors engage the armed parties, sensitizing them to the needs of civilians in the area and where necessary arranging for cessation of hostilities to keep people safe, taking them to hospitals and safe places.
  • #14 We need to develop unarmed civilian protection as a profession and vocation for millions!
  • #16 For direct protection of civilians and deterring and preventing violent conflicts
  • #17 Rotarians, and community volunteers trained in UCP, could help eradicate the remaining cases of polio which are in areas of armed conflict. Volunteers in those areas could protect vaccinators, but could also contribute to the reduction of violence and the safety of civilians to make a safer place and mitigate polio and other contagious diseases.
  • #18 Is there really conflict among businesses? We don’t see it that often. I would drop it.
  • #19 We do not do collaborative economic development.
  • #20 Start up team in Iraq: four UCPs who would train civilians to be village protectors and peace monitors. Northern Iraq NOT Mosul
