Research
• So looking back through my research I can see some clear strengths and
weaknesses.
• The first strength I can see in my research is that from the strat of this unit I knew
that I wanted to make a magazine review for the film Goodfellas and when I was
looking at the posters and other source material I noticed that they were bleak in
colour and mood. So I decided to look up other magazines but look for bleak
colours on their covers. I did this because I thought it would help me when it came
to planning and making my final product.
• One weakness I can see is that I think I should have also looked at magazines with
different colour schemes as I also think this could have helped me come up with
different designs for my magazine and possibly taken a different colour scheme for
my magazine cover and double page with still keeping in the same tone and mood
the film posters express to the audience.
• Another strength I can see from my research I can see is that when it came to
looking at the audience profiles I knew what I was looking for and looking at, I was
able to analyze each magazines audiences to the best of my ability. I think this
helped my product because it gave me a good understanding of what audience
looks for different products so I knew how to target my product.
Planning
• So looking back through all of my mind maps, mood boards, style sheets, experiments and
planned layouts I can see some clear strengths and weaknesses.
• First I looked back through my mind maps and mood boards, one strength from my mind maps I
can see that I thought everything through. For example when I thought about making a review for
a video game I explained what game category I would choose the type of audience I would have to
appeal too and what I would write about in the review.
• One weakness of my mind maps I can see is that when it came to making the third mind map
which I really didn't know what to think about. I am not a huge TV watcher which put me at a
disadvantage when making this mind map. I choose this because I realized I was running out of
time and just wanted to get a quick idea down. Which you can tell as it doesn't compare very well
to my other two ideas.
• Now looking at my mood board I can see a good clear strength, that strength being that I chose
images from Goodfellas that show the range in tone that the film takes, how the comradery
changes to them trying to kill each other out of fear. I think this is a strength because I can use
these in my review to express my opinion better across to the reader.
• One weaknesses I can see from my mood board was that I only grabbed images from Goodfellas
when if I had entertained my other ideas and got some images from them they might have
influenced my final product and could have improved it.
• When looking at my experiments I can see a strength, this strength being that I knew how I
wanted to have my magazine laid out and was confident on my design. I just knew that it could be
improved a lot for my final product.
• One weakness of my experiments I can see is that I rushed them, I know this therefore I see this as
a weakness, I know if I had had more time I could have made my experiments a lot better so it
doesn't look like its been thrown together in two hours. Although I don't think it affected my final
product.
Time Management
• When it came to this unit I don't believe I managed my time very well as I
spent a lot of time of researching my target audience and looking at
different reviews of the film so I knew how to better advertise my product
toward my audience and hit the targets. I am still very happy with the end
product as I believe all the extra time spent on research and planning
really did help me. However I did not complete the project on time due to
reasons outside of college yet I believe I completed this project to the best
of my ability.
• If I had more time to produce my work I don't believe I would have done
much expect the odd improvement as I am very happy with how the front
cover and the double page spread turned out in the end.
Technical Qualities
Looking at my magazine cover and comparing
it to the exisiting product I can see a lot of
differences. The first difference I can see is
that with my cover I haven't used a lot on my
cover and kept it very plain and the exisiting
product has a full cover. I know that I have
kept my cover quite plain because of my
research and how it showed me that all the
Goodfellas material is like this therefore I
wanted to keep close to my source material.
Now looking at my double page spread and
the exisiting double page spread I can see
again some clear differences. For example
looking at the exisiting product they have used
a picture of the main characters for the
background and two smaller pictures in the
top corner, whereas I have used various
pictures I have selected and placed them away
from my review.
Aesthetic Qualities
Personally I think my work looks good when thinking
of the source material that I have compared it too.
For example I think my front cover shows creativity
because I have looked at already exisiting covers and
posters and I have taken the aspects I liked from
them and put them on my magazine cover.
For my double page spread I decided to as a fan of
the film create a double page that I think would
attract a fan of the film, from the colours I have used
to the pictures I have chosen. For example I used red
and black as a gradient to show the darkness in the
film, to show the murder and crime (red) turns into
paranoia, drug addictions and betrayal (black)
If I was improve my work I think I would have
possibly split the text and the pictures apart, for
example on the right hand side I could have placed
some pictures in the same order but have some text
underneat and have done on the same side or in a
different order by putting the text up top and
pictures on the bottom.
Audience Appeal
So I did a lot of research into my audience so I would know how to better advertise my product
toward my audience and really get them interested in my product. When looking at my product
my front cover has specifically been made to target my audience and draw them in. The front
cover is the first thing the audience will see and that it the oppurtunity to really draw them in
and get them interested in my magazine. That is why I took all of my target audience notes and
really tried to throw in as much as I possibly could into my front cover. For example when I was
doing my research I noticed that the main audience of Goodfellas are people that watch
biographic/crime/drama films, therefore I tried to make the front cover just like the films poster.
Not giving much away, leaving plenty of mystery and I picked pictures out of the characters that I
think show off the drama within the film.
Then with the double page I decided that to appeal to mty audience I would select the pictures I
wanted to use for it very carefully, I thought what pictures can I try to use to express the drama
of the film through, how in one scene the characters can be getting drunk and laughing together
straight to someone being killed at the snap of a finger and instantly the entire mood has just
been flipped on it's head.
