Prinz metal angina, also known as variant angina, is a type of chest pain caused by spasms of the coronary arteries. It commonly occurs at rest or during sleep, unlike stable angina which is usually triggered by exertion. The spasms reduce blood flow and oxygen to the heart, causing chest pain. It is typically treated with nitrates to dilate the arteries or calcium channel blockers to prevent spasms. Lifestyle changes like quitting smoking and avoiding substances that can trigger spasms are also recommended.
