3.1 Project Brief
Taylor’s University Management has approached One Associates with an idea of setting up a pavilion. The pavilion is dedicated into housing
architectural and design models display for the university community as well as to the public. The pavilion is to be done for the upcoming
International Conference that will be held in the university compound in 6 months’ time, starting from April 2017.
3.2 Client’s Requirements
Our client, Taylor’s University Management, has indicated a few requirements for the pavilion set up in the given site. The given budget for the
pavilion set up from the client is about RM500, 000. The pavilion, which is built to house selected architecture and interior design models, is to
cater about 100 – 150 people at a time. It is to also be able to interlink with the campus link way and has a progressive image. The pavilion must
be energy efficient and also sustainable whereby usage of containers are encouraged.

Taylor’s University as a prestigious educational institution is built on
a 27 acres of tropical greener with a 5.5 acre man-made lake. The
modern university campus creates casual learning environment
which encourage interactions and social activities in the study
campus. Moreover, located in a suburban environment, the campus
is heavily relying on private vehicles as method of transportation. As
such, the campus is limited to students and gated from the housing
district.
Site Context
Located by the side of the Taylor’s University educational block, the
site is located on the lake which is the centric of the campus adjacent
to the educational blocks of the campus. The site has an advantage
of convenience and strategic to attract visitors into the building.
The lake is inhabited by small animal such as fishes and birds,
therefore, the construction should be cautious and friendly to the
ecosystem.

4.2 Precedent Studies

Urban Rigger/ BIG
Location: Copenhagen, Denmark
Build Up Area: 680sqm
Year: 2016
Purpose: Student Housing
The project is aimed to provide
low cost student accommodation
in the center of Copenhagen. By
making use of the standard
container system, it increases the
flexibility of the building typology
while keeping it affordable.

Building is made up of nine shipping
containers stacked and arranged on a
floating base at the harbor, creating 15
studio residences in two levels.
Windows and doors in the building are
punched in the ends and flanks of the
corrugated metal blocks, which are
painted in bright aquamarine, giving a
sense of vibrancy to the area.

4.2.2 Structural Precedent Studies
ECOntainer Bridge/ Yoav Messer Architects Ltd
A project soon to be under construction, located in Ariel Sharon
Park, a nature conserve rooted in the ideas of environmental
ecology and sustainability. The bridge therefore follows par with its
reuse of shipping containers to enhance the space, or rather connect
the two side of the site. The repurposing of used containers is fast
and easy work as it can be done off site and later assembled. A new
steel truss will be integrated with the metal boxes as the primary
structure of the bridge. The bridge is supported by three tree
columns that use the container’s structure.
Silodam/ MVRDV
In the western part of Amsterdam, there has been an extensive
urban operation undertaken in order to densify the city and to meet
the demands of the market. The once former dam with a silo
building on top has been transformed into a new neighbourhood that
consists of a series of components; a dam with a sunken parking lot,
renovation of the old silo buildings, the required mix of less
expensive social housing and so on. To help pay for parts of this
operations, a new housing block was introduced. With luck of the
Dutch’s real estate boom, it was proposed in regards of higher
profits. Unfortunately, the problem of a fast changing housing market
causes various kinds of housing types making Silodam to be a
mixed used building until now.

5.1 Success Criteria
5.1.1 Scope
In every project, there must be a goal, an objective. By achieving what was initially intended, that would determine the success of the project.
However, in order to achieve success or to increase the percentage of success rate, numerous considerations and factors must be taken into
consideration. The scope of this project is to design a container ppavilion for the display or architectural works and models at Taylor’s University
Lakeside Campus. The design will be located on the lake, opposite the commercial block.
The project must achieve the following to be considered successful:
 The project must be completed within the time frame of 27 weeks.
 The project must incorporate sustainable features to reduce cost and have an ecological benefit to the environment.
 The project must fulfil the client’s brief to design a container pavilion to house student models.
 The project must meet the client budget of RM 500,000.

5.1.2 Project Triple Constraint
Cost
Cost is an important factor to consider in this project in order to produce a low cost and maintenance proposal. Thus, in generating the design for
the pavilion, One Associates has been detailed in the selection of cost efficient components to maintain the client’s budget of RM 500,000.
Quality
One Associates has chosen the best quality materials and finishes as well as selected the best possible products in the design of the pavilion. This
is in line with the company’s vision to provide the number one design and service to the client and allow for a high level of client and end user
satisfaction. Moreover, the design of the pavilion is also equipped with sustainable features such as rainwater harvesting that will be able to
reduce the ecological impact on the environment.
Time
In order to reduce the overall cost of the project, the duration of the project must be minimized. Thus, to minimize the time taken the project team
efficiently structured the task flow and ensure that the critical path does not encounter delays.

The pavilion also should be upcycling which reflect the innovative and environmental concern in Architecture and interior design. The strategy is to
recycle container and transform it into the venue which also allows prefabrication for fast installation and minimal impact to the environment. The

The ground floor has a courtyard divided by the
container on the first floor. The outdoor gallery is placed
on the West of the deck to allow visual connection to
the commercial block of the Taylor’s University.
The first floor has a C shaped circulation for the indoor
gallery. It also caters an office and a activity room.

The spaces are arranged in a sequential of lobby,
gallery to shops according to hierarchy of space. The
spaces will promote circulations of the place with a
sense of exploration.

6.7 Rendered Perspectives
To invite the public into the building, the facade facing the educational blocks is transparent and open as possible.

The courtyard creates enclosure as the focus of the circulation.

To connect the upper and lower floor, the outdoor gallery has skeletal stainless steel structure to hang displays while provide connectivity for the
two floors.

The outdoor gallery can be seen from the opposite of the building which evokes a sense of curiosity and connects the pavilion with the campus.

7.0 LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
7.1 Overview
Landscape is more than just scenery. Landscape is what gives meaning and value to the world around us, contributing greatly to our sense of
identity and quality of life. Landscape architecture is the design of outdoor public areas, landmarks, and structures to achieve environmental,
social-behavioral, or aesthetic outcomes. It requires an understanding of people, land and the fit between them.
The objective of having landscape at the pavilion is to influence or stimulate the student/user senses as it refreshes the minds with the quality of
nature around us. The outdoor gallery designed with the landscape is to provide student/user with a space where they can feel relaxed in
displaying their models and at the same time being engaged with nature. This allows them to experience the freshness of air and landscape while
viewing the gallery. The landscape designed is visually pleasing and cost-efficient to achieve sustainability and balance with the local climate and
environment as part of achieving thermal comfort.

9.1 Structural Design Proposal
In order to sustain the load transfer from the container structure, reinforced concrete post and beam foundation is chosen, as it is able to withstand
the live as well as the dead load on the lake. The foundation is chosen based on the analysis of the site’s condition.
9.1.1 Site Condition
Location of site
The lake, which is said to be a mining area in the past still, remains as a landscape design for the school. As the proposed layout sits on the lake, a
strong foundation is required in order to withstand the load as well as the soil condition under water.

9.2 Load Distribution Diagram
The proposed post and beam foundation is arranged in an order that the load from the structural above could be evenly distributed among the
beams and columns. This is in order to prevent from imbalance structure (slanting) in the proposed building.
9.2.1 Advantages of Post and Beam Foundation
- Strong and stable foundation
- Less maintenance required
- Durable for a long period of time
- Able to withstand the force acting on it

9.3 Platform Detail Diagram
The platform is a prefabricated concrete slab that later on is decked with timber planks. The material used for the platform slab will be reinforced
concrete. It will be top with 12mm thickness laminated timber deck to provide a more nature like feel to the site. The thickness of the reinforced
concrete slab is 150mm.

9.4 Staircase Detail Diagram
The open stairs is prefabricated from the manufacturer and is put on site for quick installation purposes. This prefabricated open staircase is made
out of stainless steel. This is in order to incorporate the sustainability into the proposed layout as well as providing a rustic industrial like feeling to
the proposed building.

10.5.2 Installation of Solar Panel
The solar panel is placed onto the container’s roof, as this is
where it can get the most sunlight to convert into DC electricity.
The charge controller situated near the M&E room protects the
batteries by regulating the flow of electricity to batteries. The
batteries stores the power before the inverter converts the DC
electricity to AC Power to fed into the electrical panels. A solar
inverter helps in converting Direct current into batteries or
alternative current, which helps people who use limited amount
of electricity.

10.6 Rainwater Harvesting System
VODA 2 is a pumpless rainwater harvesting system which comes with in-built filtering, ensuring that the water in the tank is debris free. It is wall
mounted and takes up minimal spaces from the container. It comes with a back up system that automatically allows water to flow in from the main
water tank if the Voda’s capacity is below 10 flushes. In addition, it can saves up to 43 flushes with its 80 gallon capasity tank.
