  STRATHMORE PARK IMPROVEMENTPLAN Client: Incorporated Village of Great Neck Located in The Village of Great Neck, Strathmore Park was created on a parcel of vacant land, which borders a former tidal creek and pond. Tasked with designing an environmentally sensitive, passive recreation park, col- laborated closely with a team of environmental consultants, associate landscape architects, engineers and Village officials. As project manager, led the project through the permit, design phase and initial construction. Design concepts were based on the relationship of the location to water, through flowing streams, rolling waves and nautilus shapes. The boardwalk undulates like waves alongside the stream, a wave field of earth berms fills the open areas of the park and the boardwalk formed to reflect the Golden Spiral. The program included a boardwalk, a woodland trail and stream restoration. Ecologically sensitive, a native plant palette was selected complementing site and local condi- tions and integrating habitat enhancement measures for the Park. The boardwalk planks were made of Cumaru, a Brazilian hardwood that is grown specifically for com- mercial harvesting. Due to soil moisture and instability, Diamond piers© were used in place of the traditional timber piles in order to support the structure. These, spider like piers, help spread the weight evenly on the surface with out the need to penetrate deep in to the ground. The structure and trail alignment and surface were de- signed to be compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Construction of the park began in 2005 and Park was officially opened Spring of 2009. ORA D. One project breeds the next and the next. This project was case in point. With a limited budget the project began as a shoreline remedia- tion for a private beach; a response to a Town tree clearing violation. The restoration plans were small and covered an area of approximately 400 LF of disturbed tidal shoreline. This led to the realization that the com- munity would benefit from a Master Plan. The intent was to provide the client with a resource guide for the future and propose adaptive management strategies to optimize restoration efforts; preserve natural viewsheds and prevent future regulatory violations. The Shoreline Vegetative Management Plan (SVMP) document was developed with a variety of digital tech- nology on very a tight budget. This project provided me an opportunity to integrate all the digital technology available to me to create interpre- tive, educational and aesthetically pleasing visuals for an otherwise quite mundane document. Without being environmental experts and without spending much time reading the document, the clients were able to view areas of future concerns and envision their next steps. BERMAN, RLA 184 Craig Avenue, Freeport, NY 11520 (H) 516-868-8233 (C) 516-286-7710 [email protected] WATER QUALITY MEASURES Client: Nassau County Department of Public Works Over a period of ten or so years Nassau County DPW has been allocating funds for water quality improvement measures in many of their local freshwater ponds. My work with the County began while employed at Landtech Design PC in support of the engineers and more recently with EEA Inc. Though each pond has its own set of issues, having followed these projects over a period of 8 years, there was much learn from and lots to apply the second time round. At Landtech we assisted developing site plans and details for erosion control measures, intended to restore the shoreline vegetation along the pond edge. Additional site specific design efforts were made to redirect public circula- tion away from the water’s edge and improve hardscape amenities. My responsibilities included collaborative efforts with the engineers developing site plans, selecting appro- priate plant material and preparing some of the construc- tion documentation. With EEA’s firm profile being ecological consultants, the focus of the overall work changed, though the intent was the same. Responsible for obtaining the environmental permits as well as ecological inventories of flora and fauna within and surrounding the ponds and streams, water quality and sediment sampling and testing, EEA developed several overall recommendations for water quality and habitat improvements, including invasive plant control, best management practices and public outreach. My work as a designer and a landscape architect included some public outreach and more specifically the site design, plant material selection and preparation of construction documents in the second and third phases of the project.   LIVE CRIBWALL &BRUSHMATTRESS Client: Private Residence The crib wall and brushmattress shoreline stabilization techniques applied at this were designed and placed as bio-engineered alternatives the more traditional structural approach such as bulkheads and stone revetments. At times when the natural slope exceeds of the natural angle of repose of the soils and where brushmattress and live stakes are not enough, additional structural support may be required. Installation of the live cribwall at the site was critical in order to stop the continuous degradation of the slope and prevent future collapse of the natural wooded vegetation in to the tidal Creek. The construction details on this page show the wooden cribwall structure, which is built into the ground in sections and is then filled with stone and soil. For extra support, additional layers of stone and Geogrid© were integrated in to the structure. A variety of specially selected plant species, chosen for their ability to withstand the salinity and shade in the creek, were then used live stakes and inserted in to the open weave of the wooden structure. Details in this project were based on schematic detail pub- lished by the USDA Engineering Handbook. They include site specific information and are drawn with first hand experience of installing these systems in the ground. CONSTRUCTION DETAILS ORA D.   SHARED USE PATH- DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION Client: The City of Glen Cove, NY The Glen Cove Esplanade at Captain’s Cove initiated the revitalization efforts by the City of Glen Cove. With a 16’ dedicated public right-of-way along the waterfront being the first of more development to come, the City of Glen Cove, Long Island hoped to reclaim the industrial- ized, environmentally challenged and under utilized properties alongside Glen Cove Creek and turn the area into a regional tourist destination. The Glen Cove Esplanade was envisioned as a bicycle/ pedestrian shared use path, alongside the Creek, which would be extended into the downtown business and retail districts. The design project, funded partially by the NYS Department of State, included site plans, construc- tion documents, details, a Design Report and a manual of Design Guidelines for the future development. Since this project was to set the stage for the future develop- ment, preliminary drawings and case studies were done with an eye in to the future and included much more than the built environment of 2002.
