Q4: How did you use media
technologies in the construction
and research and planning and

Google forms
Google forms was used for the evaluation of my products, as I
conducted my audience research (question 4) with this
software. It was useful and convenient for me to use as it
collected the statistics for the response by itself, and it also
produced a list of people’s answers so I was clearly able to see
the if there were any major points that were more popular
than others. For example, a lot of people said that there were
a good variety of expert and vox pop interviews, and I took
this into consideration when making changes to the editing of
the documentary.
Microsoft word has been used for many different purposes such as
typing up the script, our progression diaries and analysing example
documentaries (student and professional), and the analysis of looking
at student radio trailers. It was easy to use as I have used Word many
times and it was easy to upload on to the blog.

• The purpose of documentaries
• I used Prezi for both of these tasks. It was
easy to use as I am familiar with this soft
ware and have used it for my foundation
portfolio in year one. The inclusion of this
software meant that our blog incorporated
a variety of different software's and make
our research and planning interesting and
entertaining especially as the format of
the presentation is in a bubble diagram
style.
Powerpoint
PowerPoint presentation has been used for many
of our posts, it’s easy and simple to use.

Emaze
I have used Emaze for three tasks, which were case studies of killers
associated with violent video games, mass shootings linked to video
games and what makes a good magazine article. I enjoyed how easily I
was able to embed video clips on to this software, for example I added
videos of mass shooters and this combines the visual features as well as
being able to viewing clips. Emaze also had a range of different designs
and styles which made sure my tasks included a creative and visual
element to them.

We used Youtube for our research and planning as we recorded
video diary entries, as we thought that this would be a useful
feature to help discuss are ideas together as a group, and to
decide on further steps, what we could have improved on and
to reflect on current progress. Diary entries have also been
used to show how we have been working together as a team
and how we have split up different tasks between us.

Google chrome
Google chrome was one of the software's which allowed us to carry out our
research and planning. It was especially important for me as it was the main
search engine I used to gather information on the topic research of our
documentary. For example, I investigated the history of documentaries,
specific case studies and key facts and statistics (e.g. how there are 2 billion
gamers in the U.K) which played a large part of our background footage.
Blogger
Blogger has been used to put all of our work on
to one site, and we are able to view what each
group member has done and to organize our
posts. It clearly shows if we need to divide our
tasks between ourselves so that everyone in our
group has the same amount of work to do.

Media Website
We used the media website (available on the Mac computers) to access previous
examples of student products that have been created. We used these for
inspiration to try and make our own creations as professional and realistic as
possible. This website was helpful as it not only included examples of the
documentary, but the two ancillary products in conjunction to this (radio trailer
and listings article.) The inspiration that has derived from these past student
examples can be seen in our own products, for example at times we were stuck on
some of the background footage to incorporate into our documentary, how many
colours to incorporate into our listings article, and how to capture our listener in a
short and effective way for the radio trailers. We looked at examples to try and
see how they tackled this.
Slideshare
Slideshare has been helpful in terms of
embedding tasks on to Blogger. Although on
the down side, sometimes the quality is
slightly blurred when it has been uploaded on
to the blog.

• Adobe premiere has been used on the
macs to edit our documentary The use
of this technology has enabled our
group to edit seamlessly and introduce
us to a range of new editing skills. For
example:
• How to cut clips
• How to add titles
• How to speed up footage
• How to adjust sound level
• All these skills make sure that we stick
to the typical codes and conventions of
a documentary and that it looks as
professional as possible

Editing the sound:
- Applying dots with the pen tool on the sound level to increase/
decrease and fade the volume eg: during the background footage the
volume was louder in contrast to a lower volume level during the
interviews so we could hear the speech clearer

The scanner has been used to scan in thing such as the
story board I created, my for and against poster for my
topic research. Usually rough pieces of work such as script
drafts, brainstorm and things to incorporate are evidence
of how me and my group have been researching and
planning.
Hd/still camera
• The HD cameras have been used to record background footage,
both voxpop and expert interviews, diaries of our group discussing
our progress and how far we have come and discussing/analysing
what we liked and what we didn’t like about a professional and
student listing magazine and the features that we can potentially
apply to our own product.
• The still camera was specifically used to film our title sequence at
the beginning of our documentary, where the papers were used to
spell out the words “video games.” We tried using a normal
camera to do this, but the bird eye view from the still camera
which captured the images professionally. (ie- as it takes the
pictures itself, without anyone pressing a button, everyone is
stood away which makes sure that there is no shadows in the
background which would make the lighting uneven.)
Mac computers
The Mac computers allowed us to access
certain software's for example Adobe
Premiere which was the main programme
that was used in the process of
constructing our documentary. We also
used the Mac computers as part of our
background footage in our documentary.
This was useful as the target audience is
clearly able to see the screen as it is
wide and big. These computers were also
very helpful for us to use as we could
access the college`s media website
which has examples of student
documentaries, trailers and listing
articles.

Headphones/microphone and
tripod
• The microphone has been used to pick up the sound for when our
group conducted interviews, (voxpops and expert.) The use of this
is to ensure that the sound of the speaker is clear and well heard.
Especially during vox pops, as background noise of people talking in
the background in interviews carried out with students in college
can be heard, and the sound would be unclear if a microphone was
not used.
• Headphones have also been used as part of the interview process,
as the person who is wearing them needs to ensure that the sound
levels are clear, and so that no small noises in the background such
as whispering of the filming crew, or movements of the microphone
are picked up. Checking the sound levels ensures that the
interviews and overall documentaries sound as professional as
possible.

Tyber andWhatsapp
The Whatsapp app has been used by our group to
create a group chat and share and discuss ideas
regarding which posts what group member is going to
carry out, sending pictures of work that we have
done and seeing if anyone could give some feedback
and if everyone approves and organizing interviews.
The proliferation of technology means that we can
share and discuss ideas and get people’s opinions
without them being there.
Tyber was used to contact the experts for our
interviews, and it was a quick and convenient way to
get a fast reply from the people we asked.
