 Bold colours

‘Kerrang!’ is an inspiration to my magazine. I showed this by using similar colours and house
styles as ‘Kerrang!’. I wanted a similar outcome for my magazine..
I like the colours ‘Kerrang!’ used because they are bold and stand out. The variety of colours
break up the page which makes it look interesting but not too cramped.
The colours used for ‘Broadcast’ were creative, bold and unique.
I interpreted the 'rule of three‘ into my work, (Blue, Red and Orange) as well as the white and
black. On ‘Kerrang!’, the red’s and white’s stand out the most. This is why I put ‘Avenge The
     Heartache’ in white.

‘Kerrang!’ ‘Broadcast’
My magazine will be released every fortnight and at the price of
£1.99. My product is mass produced as it is sold worldwide. My
magazines masthead – ‘Broadcast’s’ name was created when
thinking of a worldwide product.
‘Broadcast’ was a relevant name as it represents ‘sound waves’
being broadcasted over the entire world (news should be known
all around the world).
Similarly, ‘Kerrang!’ is ‘The worlds biggest selling rock magazine’
which shows that they are mass produced like my magazine. It
was first published on 6 June 1981 as a one-off supplement in
the Sounds newspaper. Kerrang was named after the word that
derives from the sound made when laying a power chord on an
electric guitar – ‘Kerrang!’
I gained inspiration from ‘Kerrang!’ as I wanted my magazine to
represent the same forms and conventions as ‘Kerrang!’. I used a
lot of the same layout and colours to try to do so. However, I
wanted to add my own unique twist to the magazine, I did this by
changing the price, images and fonts.

The title or ‘masthead’ is a combination
of an image, text and an overlay which
makes it look unique to my style and
magazine.

I decided to use drop shadow to give it
a third dimensional effect.

I then wanted to add a variety of colours
as an underlay, so I used Google and
found the image I wanted to use. Then I
added it in and made the writing an
overlay to the colourful image.

I then played around with adjustments
until it was a style I liked. This included
changing adjustments like contrast and
levels and turning the opacity down.

I thought the overall look of this title
would look great against a black
background. The title matches the
overall outcome of the magazine (by
being bold and catchy).
Masthead explained – BROADCAST (‘around the world’)
1) I chose to use this image because it
represents my magazines name.
The pattern on the image to the right is
representing ‘Radio Waves’, this is
done by how the pattern is swirly and
‘wave like’. (Radio waves broadcast
around the world)

2) I chose to use the font ‘Urban Jungle’
because it also fits in with the
representation of the magazine. It’s bold
and the houses underneath the text/font
are there to represent the way my
magazine will be sold around the world.

3) Colour, I liked the colours on the
image because it puts ‘fun’ and ‘life’ into
my magazine. Without the colours, the
masthead will be of simple colours such
as black and white.
I stuck to using three main fonts for my magazine. I did this to ensure that
it would not look messy or unprofessional. The layout of the writing is short,
snappy and informative. It gets straight to the point and is easy to read.

Urban Jungle- I downloaded and used this font because I liked the style of
the block writing and the ‘housing’ effect underneath it. I thought this would
correspond with my magazine because it takes the form of a city which
suits my title name 'Broadcast‘(around the world).

Punk Rock Show- I used this font because it’s bold and unique. I liked the
way the size of the text is petite compared to the outline and thought it
would stand out with the outlined text against a black background.

Arial- I used Arial because its similar to the font they use on ‘Kerrang!’. I
wanted to use a font in which I could write my main information with. I
needed a font that was easy to read compared to Urban Jungle or Punk
Rock Show so I chose Arial. It is clear, readable and nice to look at.

I showed this by using similar colours and house styles as ‘Kerrang!’. I wanted a similar outcome for my magazine.. I like the colours ‘Kerrang!’ used because they are bold and stand out. The variety of colours break up the page which makes it look interesting but not too cramped. The colours used for ‘Broadcast’ were creative, bold and unique. I interpreted the 'rule of three‘ into my work, (Blue, Red and Orange) as well as the white and black. On ‘Kerrang!’, the red’s and white’s stand out the most. This is why I put ‘Avenge The Heartache’ in white.

My magazine willbe released every fortnight and at the price of £1.99. My product is mass produced as it is sold worldwide. My magazines masthead – ‘Broadcast’s’ name was created when thinking of a worldwide product. ‘Broadcast’ was a relevant name as it represents ‘sound waves’ being broadcasted over the entire world (news should be known all around the world). Similarly, ‘Kerrang!’ is ‘The worlds biggest selling rock magazine’ which shows that they are mass produced like my magazine. It was first published on 6 June 1981 as a one-off supplement in the Sounds newspaper. Kerrang was named after the word that derives from the sound made when laying a power chord on an electric guitar – ‘Kerrang!’ I gained inspiration from ‘Kerrang!’ as I wanted my magazine to represent the same forms and conventions as ‘Kerrang!’. I used a lot of the same layout and colours to try to do so. However, I wanted to add my own unique twist to the magazine, I did this by changing the price, images and fonts. ‘Kerrang!’ Broadcast

The title or‘masthead’ is a combination of an image, text and an overlay which makes it look unique to my style and magazine. I decided to use drop shadow to give it a third dimensional effect. I then wanted to add a variety of colours as an underlay, so I used Google and found the image I wanted to use. Then I added it in and made the writing an overlay to the colourful image. I then played around with adjustments until it was a style I liked. This included changing adjustments like contrast and levels and turning the opacity down. I thought the overall look of this title would look great against a black background. The title matches the overall outcome of the magazine (by being bold and catchy).

Masthead explained –BROADCAST (‘around the world’) 1) I chose to use this image because it represents my magazines name. The pattern on the image to the right is representing ‘Radio Waves’, this is done by how the pattern is swirly and ‘wave like’. (Radio waves broadcast around the world) 2) I chose to use the font ‘Urban Jungle’ because it also fits in with the representation of the magazine. It’s bold and the houses underneath the text/font are there to represent the way my magazine will be sold around the world. 3) Colour, I liked the colours on the image because it puts ‘fun’ and ‘life’ into my magazine. Without the colours, the masthead will be of simple colours such as black and white.

I stuck tousing three main fonts for my magazine. I did this to ensure that it would not look messy or unprofessional. The layout of the writing is short, snappy and informative. It gets straight to the point and is easy to read. Urban Jungle- I downloaded and used this font because I liked the style of the block writing and the ‘housing’ effect underneath it. I thought this would correspond with my magazine because it takes the form of a city which suits my title name 'Broadcast‘(around the world). Punk Rock Show- I used this font because it’s bold and unique. I liked the way the size of the text is petite compared to the outline and thought it would stand out with the outlined text against a black background. Arial- I used Arial because its similar to the font they use on ‘Kerrang!’. I wanted to use a font in which I could write my main information with. I needed a font that was easy to read compared to Urban Jungle or Punk Rock Show so I chose Arial. It is clear, readable and nice to look at.
