What have you learnt
from your audience
feedback?
EVALUATION QUESTION 3
Considering how to get feedback:
To collect my audience feedback, I used an online survey (Survey Monkey). I used an online method as this is
easy to access and allows me to look at comparisons of the results easily, as the data is automatically
categorised into graphs. My target audience – 18-25s – are likely to understand online surveys and how to use
them, which is also why I chose this method. This method also allowed me to have a link to my survey which I
could then send out to people in my audience demographic. I used social media to distribute my survey link,
focusing particularly on Twitter as a platform because its age demographic is similar to that of my intended
audience. Twitter works better than a social media such as Facebook because a large using of Facebook is 45+,
which is not my age demographic and would not allow me to get thorough answers from my target market.
My Questions
My first two questions are to set apart demographic, so I can see which feedback is from my
intended target market. Gender and age group allow me to see the base of the feedback, and
give me a further understanding of how results may differ based on these set demographics. My
targeted demographic is female 18-25, as Finn Doherty’s audience is stereotypically female
based on the themes of his songs, and his age group is 18-25 so it’s likely his audience are too as
they can relate to his life experiences more.
My Questions
For this question, I want to gain an understanding of how my video portrayed its genre. My hope is
that my feedback will show most people interpret the genre as Indie-pop, which is what the genre is.
This will show I have been successful in my presentation of genre within my music video. In the
multiple answers I have included easily recognisable genre’s such as pop or indie, as well as sub-
genres such as pop-punk, to create a wider field of the audiences interpretation. I have also added
genre’s heavy metal and classical, both far from the actual genre so if this is selected, I can gain an
understanding of how this persons lack of knowledge of music may influence their other answers.
My Questions
What did you enjoy most about this music video?
I included this question to gain an understanding of what was successful within the video.
What would you improve about this music video?
I included this question so I could see multiple perspectives of any criticism I could learn from, and to further see how
people interpreted any weak points in the video.
What was your interpretation of the narrative?
This question will help me see if I was successful in the clarity of the meaning of the video, and see if it was understood what
was happening. I can also look at age groups and see if younger age groups have a positive or negative interpretation – as
the video portrays their age group.
Did you relate to any of the characters perspective?
My hope for this question is to see whether gender may influence how people look at the two characters. Female
perspectives are likely to look at the female character and perhaps sympathise, however looking at stereotypes, I am
interested to see how a male perspective could interpret the characters, and see if they related to their gender
representation in the video – the male character. I can also look at age groups and the previous question to see if how
people interpret the narrative relates to how they understand character perspective.
My Questions
This question will hopefully help me understand whether demographic affects people opinions, and if
they are interested in the artist in the way I have targeted them to be. This will also help me see if I am
successful in making the print productions and music video appealing and captivating so that people
will hopefully want to see or hear more from the artist.
My Questions
This question will allow me to see an overall opinion of the production value of my video and print productions,
and gain and understanding if I have been successful in my hope to achieve a professional quality to my work.
Using a rating system for this question will hopefully make it easier for the taker of the survey to show their
opinion, as a star rating is something widely familiar and understood, and gives a clear idea of their judgement.
My Feedback
Out of the 27 people who took my
survey, the majority were female.
This is expected due to the female
demographic of our target audience.
This majority is also useful as it
allows me to see the difference
between male and female answers,
and see how gender can influence
people’s perspectives on my final
productions.
My Feedback
The majority of the age group who responded to
my survey are 12-17, and are likely towards the
end of that age bracket due to being in the same
age group as myself (17). 37% of the answers
came from the 18-25 age bracket, which is my
target audience for the music video. I will be
focusing mostly of the answers from this age
group to allow me to see how successful I was in
aiming it to this demographic.
My Feedback
65% of people placed the music video into the indie-pop
genre, which is the intended genre. I feel this means I have
been successful in using genre conventions to fit into this
genre for both my music video and print productions, as
these results make it evident the majority of people
understood the genre.
The above data shows that the majority of the age demographic
18-25 recognised the song to fit into the indie-pop genre. I can
take this as a strength as it shows my intended audience have an
understanding of the genre, perhaps because they enjoy this form
of music.
My Feedback
The female majority of respondents said something they enjoyed about the
video was the narrative. This was also an answer found common among age
groups 12-17 and 18-25. This makes sense as the narrative portrayed a
stereotypical break-up, something young adults – and stereotypically females –
struggle through in their young lives, or otherwise see portrayed in the media
such as films, TV, or fiction books.
Another example showing same findings.
My Feedback
Something I also noted from my feedback is the majority of respondents felt an improvement could
have been to use a different concept alternative to a break-up. Although a stereotypical love story
was what I was aiming for, I feel it’s interesting that perhaps people are bored of this idea. This
enforces the idea that a break-up is a well known trope within media texts, as it is evident people are
used to this concept to the point they are willing to see something different.
My Feedback
I asked takers of the survey what they interpreted of the
narrative, wanting to gain a perspective on how different
people understood the video.
The majority of surveyors understood the relationship
narrative I portrayed, and interpreted this as a negative
relationship, using descriptions such as “abusive”, “failed”
and “toxic”. The interpretation of the relationship
portrayed being unhealthy is what I attempted to show, so
I am glad people interpreted it in this way. The
stereotypical “love-hate” teen relationship often portrayed
within the media could consequently create a different
youth perspective on relationships, as they could see this
negative portrayal as normal.
My Feedback (Q6 continued)
Another interpretation of the narrative that was frequent was the
idea that young love itself is negative, and young people in
relationships are likely to have an inescapable bad outcome.
All answers that stated young love is negative came from the 18-25
age group. People of this age group having this perspective on
themselves could perhaps show they can relate to the protagonist
and her unfortunate experiences with love (see question 7), and
have also perhaps seen the other negative portrayals of young
relationships in media texts such as film or TV or other music videos
that enforce this opinion. Young people are not being exposed to
positive examples of young love, as happy relationships are less likely
to be portrayed in the media as they are stereotypically less
relatable.
My Feedback
Question 6 allowed me to look at peoples perspectives and attitudes on the narrative – finding that young people had
a negative perspective on youth relationships. Question 7 - asking if people relate to a character perspective - will
allow me to have some insight into the negative attitudes people had when answering question 6, as relatability to
character perspective could perhaps suggest the 18-25’s who answered the survey have a negative perspective due to
their own experiences in their young age.
Comparing these answers has shown me that those who have
the negative perspective on youth relationships do in fact relate
to character perspective within the video. This perhaps shows
that their own experiences have given them this perspective on
relationships, perhaps unable to have a positive outlook on
youth relationships when able to relate to the negative one I
have portrayed within my video.
In retrospect, to gain a better understanding of this perspective perhaps I should have asked takers of my survey to
expand on their answers, and see how and why they related, and to which character.
My Feedback (Q8)
Out of all 28 final respondents, 17 chose
either “likely” or “extremely likely” in response
to whether they would buy the artists album.
The majority of this – 12 – chose “likely”,
which mostly consisted of either 12-17 or 18-
25 age groups. Looking at this data allows me
to see that younger age groups evidently find
the artist more appealing, which I consider a
successful outcome as the video and print
productions are targeted towards this younger
age group. To enforce this, all 3/6 who
selected “unlikely” were all part of the 25+ age
group, showing that they did not have the
same response because it is not targeted
towards older adults.
My Feedback
I asked respondents to rate overall
production quality out of five stars
to allow me to see if production
quality was successful. Data shows
me the majority (15) rated four stars,
giving a weighted average of 3.89.
I feel this is a fairly successful
outcome, and allows me to
understand possible improvements
to higher this production quality.
