Sound
In our opening sequence we used lots of different types of sound…
We used FOLEY to add in our sound, which means adding in all our sound separately to our footage, therefore we used
much higher quality microphones to record our poem as well as the stone sound effect, when I re-enacted walking over
stones to get a sound effect to add in at the same time as our footage.
Sound effects we used…
- Crow Noise, Owl Noise, Lighting a Match
Off a YouTube account that enabled users to use their sound effects in any pieces
we wanted to, so was easy to convert into a MP3 format
- Chain Rattling, Swing Creaking
We got these sound effects of loyalty free sound effect websites online which we
simply downloaded and then imported into final cut pro and then put them where
we wanted them in our opening sequence
- Stones
To do this Elen, we recreated the scene, we recorded myself walking over
stones using an external microphone mounted to the top of one of our teachers
cameras, this was so we could get a really clear and high quality sound, we also
wanted to do this to show we could use other techniques when adding sound
effects in the form of creating our own rather than using ones that had already
been created elsewhere
What I learnt about Sound…
• I did not know what Foley was before I learnt about it, due to the
fact this was my first year studying media, so this was one of many things I
learnt throughout making my opening sequence
• As well as not knowing about Foley I also didn’t consider how much
planning and time it took to think about, find or recreate sound
effects
• It also took us a lot longer than I thought to get sound effects to fit in
time to the same motion as our footage for instance the
stepping and the swinging chains
Editing Software
For our opening sequence we used FINAL CUT PRO, which is a movie
editing software on Mac’s. We used this software as it was easily
available for us to use as well as it is also a really good piece of
software as it contains lots of tools and effects for us to use as well.
What I learnt about editing software…
• I learnt a lot about the software when making and editing our
opening sequence as I had never used the software before
so it was really interesting for me to learn.
• I also learnt a lot about things such as how to slow down
footage or speed it up as well as other things such as effects
and transitions
Filters/Transitions
We used one main filter throughout our whole sequence (apart from
the film companies) in order to make our 2015 filmed footage, look as
though it was filmed in the 1950s, it distorted the picture slightly,
adding what looked like a static effect onto it to show the quality of
cameras in the past were a lot poorer than they are today
What I learnt about Filters/Transitions…
• What filters I needed in order to change my footage to look a lot
older than it actually was, without disturbing the quality of the
image
• What transitions I needed in between my film distribution
companies in order for it to flow and look much more professional
Background
Music/Music Track
We had a backing track throughout our whole opening sequence which
we found online called ‘Come play with me’ as well as this we recorded
ourselves and another friend, speaking our poem which we also played
through a section of our opening sequence to set the scene further
What I learnt about Background Music
• I didn’t realise how much free and also loyalty free music there was
available online for anyone to use in any way they want
• What makes the perfect backing music, having to fit with the genre,
have sections of suspense that you can match to footage in order to
make it feel scarier and therefore the over all sequence looks more
effective when the music matches and is in time to the rest of the
sequence
