ABOUT OUR PRELIM
Our preliminary task is an exercise in
continuity which overall demonstrates match
on action, the 180 degree rule and
shot/reverse shot. Within this preliminary
task we had to film a character opening a door,
whilst closing it after entering the room, to
them being sat down exchanging a few lines of
dialogue with another character that is sat
directly across from the other.
NEGATIVE POINTS FROM OUR PRELIM:
• Poor acting.
• Lack of dialogue.
• The prelim didn’t not flow, hence that we
do not see the character walk from the
door to the chair- continuity.
• Lack of variety of shot types.
WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED FROM OUR PRELIM:
• In our opening sequence we considered our prelim by
adding a variety of shots to add creativity to our film,
including zooming, panning, followed by close up shots.
However we have used point of view shots at the
beginning of our opening sequence to create suspense and
mystery between both the step-dad and two children.
• We have improved our camera skills in order to follow the
180degree rule and continuity.
• The targets for our opening sequence included improving
dialogue skills and confidence in acting which we believed
we have achieved after comparing our final sequence to
our prelim.
CODES AND CONVENTIONS
Throughout our opening sequence we have included codes and
conventions such as:
- Realistic family locations- loss of innocence
- Props such as the enigma code knife
- Low angles to portray antagonist and protagonist
- Use of editing- parallel music to fit the scenes.
- Reaction shots to tell the audience how to feel.
We used the several codes and conventions in order to fit the horror genre.
OVERALL
Overall from our preliminary task we have more knowledge of filming
and editing techniques along with codes and conventions of horror.
The technology such as IMovie has allowed us to gain more skills with
the program when filming and editing our own final product.
