Sergei Bubka was a dominant pole vaulter who set numerous world records but experienced mixed results at the Olympics. He won gold only once in 1988 despite outperforming others before Olympics due to injuries or boycotts. At the 1992 Olympics, he failed to clear his first three jumps but rebounded to break his own record two months later. He withdrew from the 1996 Olympics due to a heel injury without competing.

- 3. • The masterpole-vaulter now 36, has been unlucky at the Olympics. He has won a gold medal only once, in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. In 1984, his country boycotted the Los Angeles Games. That same year, He set his first world record and two months before the Games began, he jumped 12 cm higher than the eventual Olympic title winner!
