The EPA requires oil refineries to monitor benzene and other hazardous air pollutants along facility boundaries. Currently refineries use passive sampling which has limitations including being unable to identify emission sources. This document explores using a miniature ion trap mass spectrometer called iONTRAC to enable real-time ambient air monitoring as an alternative to passive sampling. An evaluation found the iONTRAC could continuously monitor benzene and ethylbenzene levels, detect emissions as far as 200 feet away, and recover baseline levels within 2 minutes, demonstrating its potential for refinery fenceline monitoring.
