1 - Introduction
My mapping project aims to summarize and give some statistics per
item pirated on web. The map is based on different research sources, a
way I found to create a reliable and understandable visualization of the
Internet Piracy problem. It shows the most pirated items on web,
separating the category by colours (continents) and the most pirated of
each category as different countries. The proportions of the continents are
based on the general percentage found [3], and the countries are based
on different rankings (see section 3). In the following paragraphs I will
reflect on each of these numbers obtained, aiming the software, always
focusing on the impacts on both aspects: Social and Computational.
2 - The main research source and why Piracy as topic
There are several articles, blogs, and papers about piracy out there,
but one in special got my attention for three special reasons. First, the
study from BSA - The Software Alliance, '2011 BSA Global Software Piracy
Study' [2] shows some worrying data about the topic, which is my area of
study and future work field. Secondly, I came from one of the most
'pirate' countries in the world: Brazil, the eighth on a general piracy list
[3] led by countries like China, Colombia and Russia and fourth on the
‘TOP 20 Economies in Commercial Value of Pirated PC Software,
2011’ [5]. The links to complete lists are available at the references list.
And finally, the third reason: it has a reliable and complex methodology
for the research [6].
The Piracy Study [2], showed that more than 57% of users admit to
pirate software and the average amount of Pirated software installed per
PCs in 2011 was up to 110 on emerging economies, while just 60 are
non-pirates. So, why people still admitting something that is wrong? It is
like steal something, they say on that famous video about piracy [7],
which curiously has been made with a Pirated soundtrack (read the full
story [8]). I believe that the internet gives the user the comfort of 'steal'
securely, since we do not have to move more than some fingers and
done, you are a criminal. I cannot be hypocrite enough to say that I never
pirated something (thanks Napster, eMule, Kazaa and etc) and this is why
I did it. This is not a question of price or difficult to access (I know people
who would never pay $0.99 for a song, but spend $99 per night out), it is
related to culture and it is when we got on my second reason of the
previous paragraph.
The lack a "culture of copyright" is a visible issue in emerging economy
countries, and it would not be different on my country. There are so many
reasons why we are on all top lists related to piracy. First of all, the
Brazilian culture is infected with something that they call (sometimes
proudly) 'Brazilian way'. Summarizing this expression it means that there
is no reason to do something with much effort if you can do it in another
way socially accepted. Then is where we get one of the thousands of
problems caused by this 'way', the Piracy. I believe this can explain
(explain, not justify) the piracy on cheap items, such apps and music, but
what about the others more expensive like an operational systems? The
minimum wage in Brazil is R$ 724,00 (£ 195,57) [9]. The last version of
the Windows costs up to R$ 545,00 (£ 147.22) [10]. Work 3/4 of a month
to get something you 'can' download for free on your 1Mbps internet? No
way, they would say. In numbers the value of pirated Software in Brazil is
about $2.9 Million, while the legal sales reach less than that: $2.5 million,
reaching a Piracy rate of 53% [2].
In conclusion, I think the only way to decrease these numbers is with a
revolutionary culture change, starting from the educational system. In
Brazil, there are no IT courses for kids on the schools, not even in the
high school. This way, the young users will have no idea about the losses
it can cause if a company have to close the doors because of piracy
(exaggerated opinion, I know). Basic programming classes should be
mandatory, or at least optional. This way, they would think before
download unlicensed Software knowing (or having an idea) how difficult it
was to develop (as I do now on my 'crime-free' life as a computing
student). The same happens with PC games, music, movies, TV-Shows
and E-books and that is why the next section will show the numbers of
each item in the world scenario.
