Reflection N°2 “Language in Society / Society in Language”

When I started to read the text “Language in Society / Society in Language” I expected to
learn about Speech in society and how the culture is involved in the variations of language and is
directly related with our speech. Throughout the progress of the realization of the previous
summary and after reading deeply all the information provided on the text), I can realize about the
real important of the influence and the impact of the culture and society in the development and
differences of the languages.

In the text above are explained some clue concepts which I did not manage, like speech
communities, sociolinguistics that is the study of the language in society; the behavior of people in
contact, social dialects; which could be more than one in an area; a concept that I have never
heard before and now I could identify and explain very well, and also style and register. It is
absolutely important for a future English teacher as a foreign Language to know, understand and
manage all this important concepts about variation of language, in order to teach it with a deeply
understanding of the topic about.

One of the most interesting topics for me was the impact and influence of social classes in
the variation of language and the level of education, it is always occurring in every part of the
world, the more educated you are, the most higher level of speech you have, and it is the same
with the social class which you belong. Here is clearly shown the power of the language, because
people is respected and accepted according the level of speech, for example if you have a teacher
who does not speck neither in an appropriate way, nor with academics language, it means, using
non standard language, he/she will be not credible; however if another teacher who has an
excellent and educated speech, using standard English, will be mo accepted and will have prestige
as a teacher, It is not only in the educational area, is in every situation in the life, because we have
to improve our speech in order to be more respected in society. But the quality of speech in terms
of vocabulary is not the only parameter to qualify the level of speech, there are also some
phonological features that determine it, for example, something that was very interesting for me
was the study realized in U.S and Britain, in which was shown the differences in pronunciation and
the social value that it have, and I can relate it with some content viewed in phonetic classes, in
which we have learned the differences of pronunciation and the prestige that its have.

As a conclusion I can highlight the enormous importance of the language, not only in terms
of speech, but also in terms of written language. Because it is a determinant feature which makes
a person, because as I read in the text “you are what you say”.
