Respect is defined as showing high regard for oneself, others, and property. It involves treating others the way you want to be treated. There are three main kinds of respect: respect for persons, respect for nature and nonpersons, and self-respect. Philosopher Stephen Darwall distinguishes two kinds of respect: recognition respect, which involves giving appropriate consideration to facts about an object, and appraisal respect, which involves positive evaluation of a person's character. Respecting others involves getting to know people, focusing on their strengths, building trust, and understanding that we benefit from and complement each other.
