http://SociallyShaped.com
• Make sure eight AA batteries are installed and connected to the mainboard.
• Turn on Roby with a switch on the mainboard.
• Navigate to Bluetooth configuration on your Android tablet or phone
• Turn on Bluetooth and choose to pair with a new device
• Scan for Bluetooth devices and wait until “Roby” shoes up in the list
(be patient as it may take few minutes)
• Pair with “Roby”
• Enter “1234” for password if prompted
• Do not turn off your Roby yet!
You can use various Android devices to drive Roby.
This is a generic instruction, actual steps may vary depending on your Android device.
Download and install Joystick Bluetooth Commander on
your Android Tablet using Google Play Store
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectproto.btjoystick
Your Android tablet or phone needs to be connected to Internet over Wi-Fi or mobile network.
You will need to provide Google Play Store your existing Google account or create a new one.
Start Joystick Bluetooth Commander and touch Config (gear icon on the
top right corner) and choose “Options”
You will see
We need to configure Joystick Bluetooth Commander for proper communication with Roby and nice look.
This is how Joystick Bluetooth Commander looks at
the initial start.
Choose “Options for advanced users”
Make sure that “Auto connect at
start up” is checked
Hint: always turn on your Roby first, and then start Joystick Commander app. With the “Auto connect” option,
Commander will try connecting to Roby automatically.
Choose “Refresh interval” option.
Then choose 100ms
This option will transmit data from Joystick to Roby every 100 millisecond or 10 times a second.
Go back using button and choose “Timeout count”
Then select option “[Off]”
The “Timeout Count” option prevents sending data to Roby when no action is taken on the Commander. Data
sent when no action is taken may confuse Roby.
Using button navigate back to “Options” screen and choose
“Joystick Properties”
Make sure “Joystick behavior
auto return to center” is checked
“Auto return to center” option will stop Roby if you drop the tablet, and may save Roby’s life.
Hint: use gear button on the main Commander screen if you accidentally leave the menu.
Using button navigate back to “Options” screen and choose
“Buttons Properties”
Then choose “Buttons to display”
and then select “two Buttons”.
Roby uses only two buttons. Having more than two buttons will clutter Commander’s screen.
Choose “Buttons labels …”
Then enter “On” for “Button 1 label”
and “Get Up” for “Button 2 label.”
The “On” button engages Roby’s electronics. “Get Up” button will let you tell Roby to get up with the arms.
Using button navigate back to “Options” screen and choose
“Data fields properties”
Then choose “Data fields to
display” and select “[none]”.
Roby does not display any information on the Commander. We remove the data fields to have a nice and clean
remote control.
Using button navigate back to the main application screen. You
should see: Touch the Options icon on the top right
corner, select “Connect”, and choose
“Roby” from the list of paired Bluetooth
devices.
You will see “Connected to Roby” message on the left bottom corner of the screen. You are ready to go!
Hint: touch “On” button to activate Roby’s electronics. The “On” button will go green when activated.
Get Up
Get Up
• Make sure that the battery is connected to the mainboard.
• Turn on the power switch on the mainboard.
• Wait for 10-15 seconds without moving Roby to allow Gyroscope to reset. Roby
will wave an arm when it’s ready.
• Start the Android Joystick Bluetooth Commander.
• Make sure it’s connected to Roby. A light on the Roby’s Bluetooth board will be
steady.
• Touch the ‘On’ button and wait till it turns green. Roby is ready!
• Drag the yellow circle on the Commander’s screen to move Roby in a desired
direction.
• You can drive Roby horizontally or you can manually raise Roby up, or you can
touch ‘Get Up’ button to tell Roby to get up.
• We recommend to turn on your Roby first and then start Joystick
Bluetooth Commander. It should allow for automatic connection.
• If Joystick Bluetooth Commander does not connect to Roby
automatically, touch gear icon on the top right corner and choose
“Connect” as per Step 11.
• Contact us at http://forum.sociallyshaped.com if you have troubles
breathing life into your Roby.
