  What is anAbortion and Why do Women Seek Them? ·An abortion is simply defined as a medical procedure that’s meant to end a pregnancy. ·Two methods are offered for individuals who plan on having an abortion, which are medication abortion and procedural abortion. A surgical abortion is a method that occurs in a clinic in which the individual may stay at a clinic for a few hours but “the procedure itself typically takes only 5 to 10 minutes to complete” (Kay and Gotter, 2022). · A procedural abortion is done with a gentle suctioning technique. On the contrary, medication abortion deals with two pills that end pregnancy. The first pill is mifepristone, in which “it works by blocking the hormone progesterone. Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus breaks down and the pregnancy cannot continue” (BPAS). ·Some reasons why women seek abortions is financial issues, interference with their school or work or not wanting to be a single mother.

   Why is AbortionControversial? ·It is suggested that abortion is controversial because of religion and the religious beliefs held by American people and the U.S government. ·Two other factors that create controversy is the “sexual permissiveness and women’s employment” (Kelley, Headey and Evans, 1993). Despite this source being 3 decades dated, this statement seems to have held true from the year it was published until now. Abortion is controversial because of religious, primarily Traditional Christian beliefs that abortion goes against God. ·Controversy on the topic is also due to the argument about when life begins, in which a set date is placed for when a specific age will determine whether abortion is illegal or legal and ethical or unethical. Some questions that are raised in regards to when life begins may be “at the hint of a heartbeat, a first breath, the ability to survive outside the womb with the help of the latest technology?” (Varney, 2022). It’s noted that various states in the U.S have different indicators in which “life begins”, where there is no definitive answer for all states.

  About Roe vWade ·What was once never a possibility in the past, had become a reality in 1973 when Jane Roe had won the Supreme Court ruling. Roe v Wade is the infamous lawsuit that had resulted in procuring abortion rights for women in the U.S. ·Jane Roe “pseudonym for Norma McCorvey” (Loller, 2022) was a pregnant woman from Texas who had sought to challenge the Texas abortion laws, which they claimed neglected individuals’ rights to liberty. ·It’s stated that the “United States Constitution provides a fundamental ‘right to privacy’ that protects a person’s right to choose whether to have an abortion” (Temme and Marshall). ·The court’s decision to honor a woman’s right to an abortion was determined by the decision that the right to privacy extends to pregnancy.

  Roe v WadeOverturned ·The case Dobbs v Jackson affected what Roe v Wade had achieved, in which the case “challenged Mississippi’s ban on abortion after 15 weeks” (Loller, 2022). · States now have the power to determine whether abortion is allowed to the point of 24 weeks · Some states had laws placed in case Roe v Wade was overturned, laws that ban abortion effective immediately. States such as Kentucky, Louisiana South Dakota have laws that were placed to take place immediately after the overturning. (Nash and Guarnieri, 2022). ·Other states such as Idaho, Tennessee and Texas placed laws that take effect 30 days after the overturning of Roe v Wade. Another source states that clinics in states such as “Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, South Dakota, Wisconsin and West Virginia – stopped performing abortions after Friday’s decision” (Sherman, 2022). ·It’s stated that “one in three women now live in states where abortion is not accessible” (Planned Parenthood). ·The overturning of Roe v Wade resulting in abortion bans effects minority groups such as Black, Latino and Indigenous communities will continuously be affected disproportionately by systemic racism where there will be limited access to health care.

  I didn't growup religious, but I did begin attending Catholic church as a teenager. This is where I first heard people talk about abortions and why they were wrong. My church even held protests at local clinics that provided abortions. I have never thought the way they do. I don't believe that abortions are wrong and I think they should be available to anyone who wants or needs one. I also think that people shouldn't have a say on your body becuase of their religious beliefs. As a woman who lives in Texas I'm scared for the day that I or a loved one might need this procedure and won't have access to it. My Thoughts
