What Is Media?
Communication channels through which news entertainment, education, data,
or promotional messages are delivered is known as media.
Media includes every broadcasting and narrowcasting medium such as
Newspaper, Magazines, Television, Radio, Billboards, Direct mail, Telephone,
Fax and Internet.
Power of Media?
Media is a very powerful change agent. What we see in the television largely
influences our beliefs and in turn, this also affects our behavior and also help to
change our lifestyle.
1. It has the power to make the innocent guilty and the guilty innocent.
2. It acts as an Informative bridge between government and general public.
3. It helps to form opinions and make judgments regarding various issues.
Evolution Of Media in Pakistan
In Ayub khan’s Era, Pakistan Television Corporation came into being under the
Ministry of Information headed by Ubaid ur Rehman.
On November 26, 1964 the first official television station PTV transmission
broadcasted from Lahore.

In Zia ul Haq’s Era, Television was brought under the Islamalic campaign,
Heavy pressure on the media to safeguard the glory of Islam.In response to the
ban on the daily musawaat the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists protested
and launched a campaign of hunger strike.

In Pervaiz Musharaf Era, The government issued the Pakistan Electronic Media
(PEMRA) in March 2002.
PEMRA is a Country Guide to regulate the establishment of all broadcast
stations in the country specially Indian channels.
Purpose Of Media
There are three purposes of Media:
1. To Entertain
2. To Advertise
3. To Inform
Positive Effects Of Media
1. Media is essential to the health of democracy.
2. It Enables the citizens to make decisions about electoral choices
3. At the time of elections media openly and in a focused way supported
democracy
4. News channels played an important role in increasing voter turnout.
5. Coverage of several issues that needs attention.
Negative Effects Of Media
1. Spreading Vulgarity and use of Foul Language
2. Flashing news headlines with elements of negative exaggeration
3. Big deal made out of small issues
4. European and American culture is slowly covering our society.
5. Change in meal preferences
6. Children are exposed to things that they should not necessarily be exposed
to yet
7. Media sell their own value system to the kids through actors, cartoon
characters.
Conclusion
Media has revealed the facts to the people about crimes and social issues and
several other thing that the people should know. Besides spreading
exaggeration, Pakistani media should resolve the matters with positive attitude.
Media is supposed to be responsible for the present society, trends, norms,
values and so on. Media reflects the society and it is the responsibility of media
to show the positive aspects of the country to the world. It’s a need of time that
our media should work for the promoting positive and real soft image of
Pakistan and should not use negative tools to increase their viewership.
