- 3. Philosophy of Higher Education Two Philosophies represent broad divisions of Higher Education. 1. Liberal Arts Philosophy ○ To produce potential leaders of society ○ Education is the need of individual ○ As the pursuit of truth is the highest virtue that may be found through the exercise of reason. ○ It is to enhance the capacity to lead a full life.

Vocational Philosophy. ○ Suitable for the followers ○ Essentials for the needs of society ○ To equip the individual with professional skills as the nation needs trained manpower. ○ To improve man’s lot to move forward ○ This philosophy tends to political reconstruction.
- 5. Four pillars emerge from philosophy of education What is needed to cater the needs of today’s learners is proposed to be distilled into four categories. 1. Curriculum 2. Teaching Staff 3. Learning Environment 4. Learning Community/Cadre
- 6. Importance of Philosophy of Education Philosophy of education is very important as all educational theories arise from philosophy. If we are able to examine the philosophy of education, we can easily see how different theories oppose or complement each other. Therefore, an understanding of educational philosophy is helpful in directing and presenting a critique on development of educational theories. Philosophy is also important for promotion of professional and philosophical activities.
- 7. Need of the University University education is more than the next level in the learning process; it is a critical component of human development worldwide. It provides not only the high-level skills necessary for every labor market but also the training essential for teachers, doctors, nurses, civil servants, engineers, humanists, entrepreneurs, scientists, social scientists, and a myriad of other personnel. It is these trained individuals who develop the capacity and analytical skills that drive local economies, support civil society, teach children, lead effective governments, and make important decisions which affect entire societies.

- 10. Modes of the University 1. Traditional University (for teaching and research) General knowledge of arts, Sciences and Social Studies. 2. 2nd Model emphasizes training for development jobs with needs (Job oriented) of society. e.g. Medical Faculty at the university of Sindh.
- 11. Modes of the University 3. In a 3rd model the institution furnishes advice to government and development Planners. e.g . University of Nairobi in Kenya and at Addis Ababa university in Ethiopia. 4. A 4th model is to direct public policy, training and action. Academy of Philippines, Agriculture university, Tando Jam etc.

Correspondence Study (used specially in Australia). Home or Independent Study (An American Term). Non-Traditional Studies (Outreach Programs, Off-Campus)
