The Roy Adaptation Model focuses on how a person adapts to stimuli from their environment and themselves. It consists of two subsystems - the regulator and cognator. The regulator responds automatically using physiological coping processes while the cognator responds through perceptual, learning, judgment and emotional coping processes. The model also includes four adaptive modes: physiological needs, self-concept, role function, and interdependence. A case study of Mrs. M is presented, who has facial scarring following a car accident. Her care plan addresses disturbed body image, acute pain, and caregiver role strain.
