The Sardar Sarovar Dam project on the Narmada River in Gujarat aims to provide hydroelectric power and irrigation. It has an installed capacity of 1450 MW and will irrigate over 18,000 square kilometers of drought-prone land. The dam is also intended to supply drinking water to over 80,000 villages and towns. However, the project has faced significant opposition over the costs of displacement of local tribes and the environmental impacts of submerging over 13,000 hectares of land. While supporters argue it will benefit millions, critics argue the costs outweigh the benefits and rehabilitation of displaced people has been inadequate.
