George Washington Carver was an influential African American scientist born into slavery in Missouri around 1864. He was kidnapped as an infant but later raised by Moses and Susan Carver. They encouraged his intellectual pursuits and education. Carver later attended Iowa State Agricultural College and became the head of the Agriculture Department at Tuskegee University, where he taught for 47 years. His research developed improved methods of crop rotation that increased yields and soil health, benefiting farmers across America and worldwide.
