In Common Core State Standards, Grade 4
students learn about angles and by Grade 8, they
learn about sum of exterior and interior angles
of polygons.

SE09 Visualization – Getting Students
to See the Math

We will use a tangram
set for this workshop.
You can cut them out
from your handouts or
make one using the
square paper
provided.
You can also download
a tangram app from
Apple Store.
3-piece solutions
3-piece solutions
3-piece solutions can be extended
to give 5-piece solutions by adding
two largest triangles.
A non-congruent 5-piece solution
y + z = 162
Sum of angles = 360 + 180 = 540
3x = 540 – 2 x 162
3x = 540 – 324
3x = 216
x = 72
Greg Tang’s solution:
z = 2y (why?)
y + z = 162
3y = 162 = 150 + 12
y = 54
x = 180 – 2 x 54 = 180 – 108 = 72
