sequences
The first frame shows an extreme
close-up of a book page turning with
the production company in the
foreground. Books have connotations of
intelligence and preserving knowledge
but not much is given away in this shot,
leaving the audience want to find out
more.
Frame 1
Frame 2
We then see a pair of gaunt, grey hands on
a table. This shot is at a canted angle,
immediately showing that something isn’t
right. Additionally about a third of the frame
is covered by a shadow leaving the
audience wondering what is going on behind
the shadow. Also, the the hands look sick or
ill which creates an atmosphere of morbidity
and adds the enigma of what happened to
the hands.
Frame 3
Next is an extreme close-up of fingers
holding what looks like a blade. One of
the most noticeable things about the
fingers is that the skin on the fingers is
flaking and worn down and there is a lot
of dirt under the nails this could show a
lack of hygeine and hints that the
person whose fingers they are might be
potentially insane. Also, this is furthered
by the blade creating an atmosphere of
violence.
Frame 4
In the next shot we are shown
the same fingers on a small
photo with the rest of the frame
covered by a dark shadow -
again, this shadow creating
mystery about what is hidden.
The photo and the papers
underneath show that the person
might be good at keeping records
- showing it almost obsessively.
Frame 5
This shot shows the insanity of the character
explicitly as we can see the dirty fingernails
and the dirt all over the fingers, additionally
they are wearing a plaster on their thumb
adding to the atmosphere of sickness. Also,
if we already know the character is intelligent
(the book) and good at keeping records (the
photo and papers), why would they have
such a stale lack of hygiene? This enigma
demonstrates the obsessive nature of the
character.
Frame 6
Probably the most interesting shot in the
title sequence. Here we see the
character cutting the word ‘God’ out of a
dollar bill. First of all the use of tweezers
shows their careful, methodical nature
and the word ‘God’ can perhaps show
their obsession with religion especially
since their taking God out of money as
money can represent greed (a sin). this
shows that perhaps money/greed can
separate people from God.
