(THE DOCTRINE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT)
INTRODUCTION
• The doctrine of the HS is an important one for us
today in the church. In many ways, when we look at
the work of the various persons of the Trinity, we see
the HS is the one who is primarily at work during the
  age of the church.
INTRODUCTION
• The subject of the HS has been very controversial, especially in
the last few hundred years. Sometimes the book of Acts is
called ―the Acts of the Apostles.‖ However, it could also be
called the ―Acts of the holy Spirit.‖ Even a surface reading of it
reveals that fact that the HS is very active in the action being
described therein. But is it not also obvious that the work of the
church is also the work of the Holy Spirit? Before Christ left this
earth He promised 2 things. 1st, that He would build His church.
2nd, that He would send the Holy Spirit. There is no other
adequate explanation for the miraculous spread of the gospel
than the work of the Holy Spirit. Therefore let us study with care
  the subject before us.
BCP STATEMENT OF FAITH

forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the HS will not be
forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.‖
THE WORK OF THE HS: In The Church
• HS's Work in Illumination
  – Illumination is that process by which the omnipotent God in
the Person of the Spirit works in the believer to make
clear, enlighten,&teach the truth of the written revelation.
      • Jo 16:12-14 –…when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will
guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he
will speak only what he hears,&he will tell you what is yet
to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is
mine&making it known to you .
THE WORK OF THE HS: In The Church
• HS's Work in Illumination
     • 1Co 2:9-3:2 – … God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things
God…no-one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit
of God. We have…received…the Spirit who is from
God, that we may understand what God has freely given
us…The man without the Spirit does not accept the things
that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness
to him,&he cannot understand them, because they are
       spiritually discerned.‖
THE WORK OF THE HS: In The Church
• HS's Work in Salvation
  – Conviction of Sin.
     • Jo 16:7-11 — ―Unless I go away, the Counsellor will not
come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he
comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to
sin&righteousness&judgment: in regard to sin, because
men do not believe in me; in regard to
righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where
you can see me no longer;&in regard to
judgment, because the prince of this world now stands
       condemned.‖
THE WORK OF THE HS: In The Church
• HS's Work in Salvation
  – Regeneration.
     • Jo 3:5-8 — ―Jesus answered, ‗I tell you the truth, no-one
can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of
water&the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit
gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my
saying, ―You must be born again.‖ The wind blows
wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot
tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with
       everyone born of the Spirit.‘‖
THE WORK OF THE HS: In The Church
• HS's Work in forming &empowering the Church
  – Forming the body of Christ. [We will consider that more
when we come to the baptising work of the Holy Spirit.]
  – Empowering Believers. [Because there are different things
He does, they will be considered individually below.]
THE WORK OF THE HS: In The Church
• HS's Work in the Life of the Christian
  – The HS does many things for the believer, but it seems
possible to divide those ―works‖ into at least 2 different
    categories—
     • Sovereign. The HS does some things of His own
sovereign choice without asking or being dependent upon
       the cooperation of the believer.
     • Responsive. The HS does some things only as the
believer ―responds‖ or ―cooperates‖ with the work.

Christ, he does not belong to Christ.‖

  – Immersion (Baptism) of the Holy Spirit
     • Meaning of the word ―Baptism.‖
        – Baptism comes from the Greek word
          baptizw(baptizo), which means ―immerse / ilubog‖
        – This word is a transliteration(each Greek letter was
replaced by an English letter) rather than being
translated (each Greek word is replaced by a word
with the same meaning in English).

5. The Baptism of the HS vs A
            Baptism of the HS
5. The Baptism vs A Baptism
 Our discussion above indicated that B of HS is a very
flexible phrase that is used biblically to describe a
    variety of HS-related events.
 These events cover all areas of Christian experience
from salvation to the Christian life
 Filling, Coming upon, Baptism, Empowering, Pouring
out, Receiving, Gift, etc. of the HS
 We cannot identify one of them as being special
baptism as opposed to the others. ..
6. Does Baptism of the HS
              relate to …
       Inner sanctification? OR
         Service & Witness?
6. Sanctification or Service?
1. Inner sanctification? YES
        If by sanctification you mean regeneration;
 B of HS refers specifically to that act of the HS
that places the believer into the body of Christ at
         the moment of their salvation / conversion;
 It is a sovereign work of the HS
 It does not refer to a 2nd event that makes the
believer more holy than he already became at
         regeneration ..
6. Sanctification or Service?
2. Service & Witness? YES
 Because the term is also used interchangeably
with many other HS-related words, it can also
refer to the continuous filling or empowerment of
the believer throughout their Christian life.
 It is a responsive work of the HS
 It refers to events that empower believers to
perform the job of the Great Commission ..

has received to serve others, faithfully administering
God's grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he
should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If
anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God
provides, so that in all things God may be praised
  through Jesus Christ.‖

THE WORK OF THE HS: In The Church
• HS's Work in the Life of the Christian: Sovereign Work
  – The Gifts of the Holy Spirit
     • Key Questions:
        – What criteria are involved for receiving a gift?
        – Why are there different kinds of gifts?
        – Are some gifts better than others? Why or Why not?
        – Are these the only Spiritual Gifts we can have or are
          there others?
        – What is the proper way to use your gift?

8. Spiritual Gifts
Cessation vs Non-Cessation
8. Spiritual Gifts
 What is the nature of spiritual gifts?
 How do we define them?
 Are they spiritual or experiencial?
 How supernatural are they?
 How many are there?
8. Spiritual Gifts: Words
 – ―grace‖
 Gift of Grace = gift of Jesus Christ (ie. salvation)
 – ―act kindly / graciously‖
8. Spiritual Gifts: Words
 carisma – ―gift of God‘s grace;‖ ―spiritual gifts‖
     17 times in NT
          Romans – 6 times
          1 Corinthians – 7 times

          Other Pauline – 3 times

          Non-Pauline – 1 time [1Pe 4:10]

 – ―to give‖
 Used with in Eph 4:7-8; Ro 5:15-16
8. Spiritual Gifts: Defined
 carismata are any graciously conferred gift or help or
ministration rooted in the HS‘s personal presence in
the believer & used technically by Paul to describe
    specifically & distinctively unique, graciously
    bestowed, somewhat extraordinary, spiritual powers
(abilities) outworking through each believer for the
benefit of the Christian community. It is an essential
aspect of each believer‘s involvement in the
    community. – Ken Davis
8. Spiritual Gifts: Defined
1. carismata is a hard to define word
2. There are multiple gifts (not just those listed)
3. All gifts are equal
4. Tongues almost die out after 1Co 14 – little
reference to them in the church Fathers
5. Prophecy is not predictive nor prescriptive
     nor revelatory
Gifts: Cessation vs Non-Cessation
 2 basic positions
 Refers to what are considered to be the more
        supernatural gifts (sign gifts)
          Cessationist
          Non-Cessationist
              Cessation – from the word ―cease‖

     Each has 3 sub-points.
Gifts: Cessation vs Non-Cessation
 Cessationist: Miraculous Gifts Ceased w/ 12
 The More Miraculous Gifts Ceased w/ the 12
 Observation based upon historical misunderstanding
          Not textually justified
 Proponent(s): Augustine, Calvin, BB Warfield.
Gifts: Cessation vs Non-Cessation
 Cessationist: Dispensational
     The revelatory gifts
        (Tongues, prophecy, knowledge) & Apostolic
offices (Apostles, prophets) have ceased & were
        never intended for the church
 Theologically based rather than textual or historical
 Proponent(s): Dallas TS, Unger, Walrood.
Gifts: Cessation vs Non-Cessation
 Cessationist: Fundamentalist Exegetical
     Similar to A & B
     Attempt exegetical-textual base
 Christ & Apostles represent the full, final, totally sufficent
revelation of God and anything that threatens that is
           dangerous.
 Assumes revelatory gifts have ceased.
              Proponent(s): Pickford.
Gifts: Cessation vs Non-Cessation
 Non-Cessationist: Moderate Exegetical
     Say that Cessationists
        1. Cessationists argue from no clear texts
        2. Cessationists have no historical basis
        3. Cessationists use wrong definitions of ―charismata‖
 All gifts have always been present although not always
             identified
 Gifts don‘t necessarily cease (it‘s up to God)
 Many kinds of gifts available
              Proponent(s): Carson, Dunn.
Gifts: Cessation vs Non-Cessation
 Non-Cessationist: Early Classical Pentecostal
     9 gifts
 Missing for many centuries but recently restored at
the end of this time (especially tongues & healing)
     B of HS is a special experience (post-conversion)
 proven by speaking in tongues
 Opens the door to using the other gifts.
Gifts: Cessation vs Non-Cessation
 Non-Cessationist: General Charismatic
    Movements
     Since 1950s
     Many gifts
 Gifts are released by B of HS
 Tongues not necessary for proof
          Bring in prophecy

 Use OT prophetic definitions [DANGEROUS!!] ..
Ephesians 4 & the 5-Fold
 Ministry of the Church
This class will examine the 5-Fold
  Ministry of the Church from
           Ephesians 4.
Ephesians 4:1-16
I, a prisoner in the Lord, encourage you to live
the kind of life which proves that God has
called you.
Be humble & gentle in every way. Be patient
with each other & lovingly accept each other.
Through the peace that ties you together, do
your best to maintain the unity that the Spirit
gives. There is one body & one Spirit. In the
same way you were called to share one hope.
There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one
God & Father of all, who is over
everything, through everything, & in
everything.
Ephesians 4:1-16
God's favor has been given to each of us. It was
measured out to us by Christ who gave it. That's why
the Scriptures say: "When he went to the highest
place, he took captive those who had captured us &
gave gifts to people.” Now what does it mean that he
went up except that he also had gone down to the
lowest parts of the earth? The one who had gone down
also went up above all the heavens so that he fills
everything. He also gave
apostles, prophets, missionaries, as well as pastors &
teachers as gifts to his church. Their purpose is to
prepare God's people, to serve, & to build up the body
of Christ. This is to continue until all of us are united in
our faith & in our knowledge about God's Son, until we
become mature, until we measure up to Christ, who is
the standard.
Ephesians 4:1-16
Then we will no longer be little
children, tossed & carried about by all kinds
of teachings that change like the wind. We
will no longer be influenced by people who
use cunning & clever strategies to lead us
astray. Instead, as we lovingly speak the
truth, we will grow up completely in our
relationship to Christ, who is the head. He
makes the whole body fit together & unites it
through the support of every joint. As each &
every part does its job, he makes the body
grow so that it builds itself up in love.

It's not that movements abolish the
clergy. Rather they abolish the laity.
Everyone is ordained & mobilized for
                ministry.

kalooban ng ES, siya naman ang gumagamit.

THE WORK OF THE HS: In The Church RESPONSIVE WORK

• HS's Work in the Life of the Christian: Responsive Work
  – Responsive Work of the HS (Does require human
    cooperation)
  – We have looked at what we called the ―sovereign‖ works of
the Spirit, those that the Spirit does apart from dependency
or our cooperation. Now we turn our attention to those works
of the Spirit that require our conscious cooperation.
Remember, these things deal with our relationship with the
    Spirit.
  – Therefore, it is very important that we understand what it is
that the Spirit wants to do for us that we might be the
Christians God intended us to be in the church today.

THE WORK OF THE HS: In The Church RESPONSIVE WORK

• HS's Work in the Life of the Christian: Responsive Work
   – The Teaching of the Holy Spirit. [Jo 16:12-15]
      • There is a truth in this passage that the church today
needs to keep in focus. It is the work of the HS to glorify
Christ. In other words, it is His work to cause Christ to be
seen & understood. If you see an experience that exalts
the HS at the expense of Jesus Christ, then that
experience was not one that was produced by the Holy
Spirit. We need to learn that lesson today.
      • Notice in verses 14 & 15 that Christ says the HS will
―disclose‖ the truth to the believer. The Greek word
anangelei means ―He is announcing.‖ This is teaching
that the HS is the teacher, teaching the things concerning
        Jesus Christ
THE WORK OF THE HS: In The Church RESPONSIVE WORK

• HS's Work in the Life of the Christian: Responsive Work
   – The Teaching of the Holy Spirit. [Jo 16:12-15]
      • That truth of the teaching ministry of the HS should
become a conscious fact every time we study the Bible.
The Spirit will not teach us by special revelation in
dreams, visions, or writing it on the walls of our
homes, but He will take the Word of God & use it to bring
the truth to our understanding. This being true, our
relationship to Him is obviously vital to that teaching
ministry. That truth should also become a part of our
prayer when we come to study the Bible.

   – The Leading of the Holy Spirit.
      • This is another way of looking at the basic truth noted
above. However, I think there may be another facet of
meaning. The HS uses the Word of God to teach us, but
He may use the Word plus other things—other
people, sermons, circumstances, education, dreams, visi
ons, or many other things—to guide us, or lead us into an
understanding of the will of God in our lives.
      • Ro 8:14 — ―… because those who are led by the Spirit of
        God are sons of God.‖

INTRODUCTION • The doctrineof the HS is an important one for us today in the church. In many ways, when we look at the work of the various persons of the Trinity, we see the HS is the one who is primarily at work during the age of the church.
  • 3.
INTRODUCTION • The subjectof the HS has been very controversial, especially in the last few hundred years. Sometimes the book of Acts is called ―the Acts of the Apostles.‖ However, it could also be called the ―Acts of the holy Spirit.‖ Even a surface reading of it reveals that fact that the HS is very active in the action being described therein. But is it not also obvious that the work of the church is also the work of the Holy Spirit? Before Christ left this earth He promised 2 things. 1st, that He would build His church. 2nd, that He would send the Holy Spirit. There is no other adequate explanation for the miraculous spread of the gospel than the work of the Holy Spirit. Therefore let us study with care the subject before us.

    5. The Baptismof the HS vs A Baptism of the HS
  • 79.
    5. The Baptismvs A Baptism  Our discussion above indicated that B of HS is a very flexible phrase that is used biblically to describe a variety of HS-related events.  These events cover all areas of Christian experience from salvation to the Christian life  Filling, Coming upon, Baptism, Empowering, Pouring out, Receiving, Gift, etc. of the HS  We cannot identify one of them as being special baptism as opposed to the others. ..

    6. Does Baptismof the HS relate to … Inner sanctification? OR Service & Witness?
  • 81.
    6. Sanctification orService? 1. Inner sanctification? YES  If by sanctification you mean regeneration;  B of HS refers specifically to that act of the HS that places the believer into the body of Christ at the moment of their salvation / conversion;  It is a sovereign work of the HS  It does not refer to a 2nd event that makes the believer more holy than he already became at regeneration ..
  • 82.
    6. Sanctification orService? 2. Service & Witness? YES  Because the term is also used interchangeably with many other HS-related words, it can also refer to the continuous filling or empowerment of the believer throughout their Christian life.  It is a responsive work of the HS  It refers to events that empower believers to perform the job of the Great Commission ..

SOVEREIGN WORK THE WORKOF THE HS: In The Church • HS's Work in the Life of the Christian: Sovereign Work – The Gifts of the Holy Spirit • Purpose of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. The purpose of the gifts of the Spirit is clearly stated in the Scriptures below. In Eph 4:7-13 there are 4 purposes stated. These are not parallel but consecutive—that is, each one produces the next: – to prepare God's people for works of service – so that the body of Christ may be built up – until we all reach unity » in the faith& » in the knowledge of the Son of God – [until we all] become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. • 1Co 12:7 — ―Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

SOVEREIGN WORK THE WORKOF THE HS: In The Church • Ro 12:4-8 — ―Just as each of us has one body with many members, & these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, & each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.‖

SOVEREIGN WORK THE WORKOF THE HS: In The Church • 1Co 12:7-13 — ―Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, & to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one & the same Spirit, & he gives them to each one, just as he determines.‖ ―The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; & though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—& we were all given the one Spirit to drink.‖

Ephesians 4:1-16 I, aprisoner in the Lord, encourage you to live the kind of life which proves that God has called you. Be humble & gentle in every way. Be patient with each other & lovingly accept each other. Through the peace that ties you together, do your best to maintain the unity that the Spirit gives. There is one body & one Spirit. In the same way you were called to share one hope. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God & Father of all, who is over everything, through everything, & in everything.

Ephesians 4:1-16 God's favorhas been given to each of us. It was measured out to us by Christ who gave it. That's why the Scriptures say: "When he went to the highest place, he took captive those who had captured us & gave gifts to people.” Now what does it mean that he went up except that he also had gone down to the lowest parts of the earth? The one who had gone down also went up above all the heavens so that he fills everything. He also gave apostles, prophets, missionaries, as well as pastors & teachers as gifts to his church. Their purpose is to prepare God's people, to serve, & to build up the body of Christ. This is to continue until all of us are united in our faith & in our knowledge about God's Son, until we become mature, until we measure up to Christ, who is the standard.

Ephesians 4:1-16 Then wewill no longer be little children, tossed & carried about by all kinds of teachings that change like the wind. We will no longer be influenced by people who use cunning & clever strategies to lead us astray. Instead, as we lovingly speak the truth, we will grow up completely in our relationship to Christ, who is the head. He makes the whole body fit together & unites it through the support of every joint. As each & every part does its job, he makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

Remember, these things deal with our relationship with the Spirit. – Therefore, it is very important that we understand what it is that the Spirit wants to do for us that we might be the Christians God intended us to be in the church today.

THE WORK OFTHE HS: In The Church RESPONSIVE WORK • HS's Work in the Life of the Christian: Responsive Work – The Teaching of the Holy Spirit. [Jo 16:12-15] • There is a truth in this passage that the church today needs to keep in focus. It is the work of the HS to glorify Christ. In other words, it is His work to cause Christ to be seen & understood. If you see an experience that exalts the HS at the expense of Jesus Christ, then that experience was not one that was produced by the Holy Spirit. We need to learn that lesson today. • Notice in verses 14 & 15 that Christ says the HS will ―disclose‖ the truth to the believer. The Greek word anangelei means ―He is announcing.‖ This is teaching that the HS is the teacher, teaching the things concerning Jesus Christ
  • 126.
THE WORK OFTHE HS: In The Church RESPONSIVE WORK • HS's Work in the Life of the Christian: Responsive Work – The Teaching of the Holy Spirit. [Jo 16:12-15] • That truth of the teaching ministry of the HS should become a conscious fact every time we study the Bible. The Spirit will not teach us by special revelation in dreams, visions, or writing it on the walls of our homes, but He will take the Word of God & use it to bring the truth to our understanding. This being true, our relationship to Him is obviously vital to that teaching ministry. That truth should also become a part of our prayer when we come to study the Bible.
  • 127.
THE WORK OFTHE HS: In The Church RESPONSIVE WORK • HS's Work in the Life of the Christian: Responsive Work – The Leading of the Holy Spirit. • This is another way of looking at the basic truth noted above. However, I think there may be another facet of meaning. The HS uses the Word of God to teach us, but He may use the Word plus other things—other people, sermons, circumstances, education, dreams, visi ons, or many other things—to guide us, or lead us into an understanding of the will of God in our lives. • Ro 8:14 — ―… because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.‖ • ―Ang lahat ng pinapatnubayan ng Espiritu ng Diyos ay mga anak ng Diyos.‖

  • #128 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, & he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine & making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine & make it known to you.”
