(THE DOCTRINE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT)

INTRODUCTION
• The doctrine of the HS is an important one for us
today in the church. In many ways, when we look at
the work of the various persons of the Trinity, we see
the HS is the one who is primarily at work during the
age of the church.

INTRODUCTION
• The subject of the HS has been very controversial, especially in
the last few hundred years. Sometimes the book of Acts is
called ―the Acts of the Apostles.‖ However, it could also be
called the ―Acts of the holy Spirit.‖ Even a surface reading of it
reveals that fact that the HS is very active in the action being
described therein. But is it not also obvious that the work of the
church is also the work of the Holy Spirit? Before Christ left this
earth He promised 2 things. 1st, that He would build His church.
2nd, that He would send the Holy Spirit. There is no other
adequate explanation for the miraculous spread of the gospel
than the work of the Holy Spirit. Therefore let us study with care
the subject before us.

BCP STATEMENT OF FAITH

We believe in the HS who came forth from the Father&the Son to
convict the world of sin, righteousness,&judgment,&to regenerate,
sanctify,&empower all who believe in Jesus Christ. We believe
that the HS indwells every believer in Christ&that He is an abiding
helper, teacher,&guide.

THE PERSON OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
• He has the characteristics of a Person (Mayroon
siyang mga katangian ng tao).

• 1Co 2:10-11 — ―… God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of
God .… no-one knows the thoughts of God except the
Spirit of God.‖

• Eph 4:30 — ―And do not grieve the HS of God ….‖
– Will / Kalooban
• 1Co 12:11 — ―All these are the work of one&the same
Spirit,&he gives them to each one, just as he determines.‖

come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he
comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to
sin&righteousness&judgment.‖

• TheHS is an object of Faith

you were sealed for the day of redemption.‖
– Mt 28:19 — ―Therefore go&make disciples of all
nations, baptising them in the name of the Father&of the

love of God,&the fellowship of the HS be with you all.‖

you, every sin&blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the
blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone
who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be

forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.‖

THE WORK OF THE HS: In The Church
• HS's Work in Illumination
– Illumination is that process by which the omnipotent God in
the Person of the Spirit works in the believer to make
clear, enlighten,&teach the truth of the written revelation.
• Jo 16:12-14 –…when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will
guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he
will speak only what he hears,&he will tell you what is yet
to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is
mine&making it known to you .

• HS's Work in Illumination
• 1Co 2:9-3:2 – … God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things
God…no-one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit
of God. We have…received…the Spirit who is from
God, that we may understand what God has freely given
us…The man without the Spirit does not accept the things
that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness
to him,&he cannot understand them, because they are
spiritually discerned.‖

• HS's Work in forming &empowering the Church
– Forming the body of Christ. [We will consider that more
when we come to the baptising work of the Holy Spirit.]
– Empowering Believers. [Because there are different things
He does, they will be considered individually below.]

• HS's Work in the Life of the Christian
– The HS does many things for the believer, but it seems
possible to divide those ―works‖ into at least 2 different
categories—
• Sovereign. The HS does some things of His own
sovereign choice without asking or being dependent upon
the cooperation of the believer.
• Responsive. The HS does some things only as the
believer ―responds‖ or ―cooperates‖ with the work.

• Meaning of the word ―Baptism.‖
– Baptism comes from the Greek word
baptizw(baptizo), which means ―immerse / ilubog‖
– This word is a transliteration(each Greek letter was
replaced by an English letter) rather than being
translated (each Greek word is replaced by a word
with the same meaning in English).

– The Gifts of the Holy Spirit
• Purpose of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. The purpose of the
gifts of the Spirit is clearly stated in the Scriptures below.
In Eph 4:7-13 there are 4 purposes stated. These are not
parallel but consecutive—that is, each one produces the
next:
– to prepare God's people for works of service
– so that the body of Christ may be built up
– until we all reach unity

Ephesians 4:1-16
God's favor has been given to each of us. It was
measured out to us by Christ who gave it. That's why

place, he took captive those who had captured us &
gave gifts to people.” Now what does it mean that he
went up except that he also had gone down to the
lowest parts of the earth? The one who had gone down
also went up above all the heavens so that he fills
everything. He also gave
apostles, prophets, missionaries, as well as pastors &
teachers as gifts to his church. Their purpose is to
prepare God's people, to serve, & to build up the body
of Christ. This is to continue until all of us are united in
our faith & in our knowledge about God's Son, until we
become mature, until we measure up to Christ, who is
the standard.

THE WORK OF THE HS: In The Church RESPONSIVE WORK

• HS's Work in the Life of the Christian: Responsive Work
– Responsive Work of the HS (Does require human
cooperation)
– We have looked at what we called the ―sovereign‖ works of
the Spirit, those that the Spirit does apart from dependency
or our cooperation.Now we turn our attention to those works
of the Spirit that require our conscious cooperation.
Remember, these things deal with our relationship with the
Spirit.
– Therefore, it is very important that we understand what it is
that the Spirit wants to do for us that we might be the
Christians God intended us to be in the church today.


– The Filling of the Holy Spirit
• DEF — ―The Filling of the Spirit is the control of the
believer by the HS in thought, work, & action, which is
realized by His using the Word of God to bring about that
control. It is the responsibility of every believer to
continually study the Word of God & to surrender to that
control.‖
• KAHULUGAN — ―The Filling of the Spirit ay

permission of known sin to continue unconfessed in the
life of the believer.‖

―And do not grieve the HS of God, with whom you were
sealed for the day of redemption.‖

– The Teaching of the Holy Spirit. [Jo 16:12-15]
• Jo 16:12-15 – ―Marami pa akongsasabihing mga bagay
sa inyongunit hindi ninyo ito makakayanan sa ngayon.
Pagdating niya, ng Espiritu ng katotohanan,
papatnubayanniya kayo sa lahat ng katotohanan.
Hindi siyamagsasalita ng tungkol sa sarili niya. Kung ano
ang kaniyangmaririnig, iyon ang kaniyangsasabihin.
Ipahahayagniya sa inyo ang mga bagay na darating.
Luluwalhatiinniya ako sapagkattatanggapinniya ang sa

bagay na mayroon ang Ama ay akin. Kaya ngasinabiko,
na tatanggapinniya ang sa akin at ipahahayagniya ito sa
inyo.‖


• There is a truth in this passage that the church today
needs to keep in focus. It is the work of the HS to glorify
Christ. In other words, it is His work to cause Christ to be
seen & understood. If you see an experience that exalts
the HS at the expense of Jesus Christ, then that
experience was not one that was produced by the Holy
Spirit. We need to learn that lesson today.
• Notice in verses 14 & 15 that Christ says the HS will
―disclose‖ the truth to the believer. The Greek word
anangelei means ―He is announcing.‖ This is teaching
that the HS is the teacher, teaching the things concerning
Jesus Christ


• That truth of the teaching ministry of the HS should
become a conscious fact every time we study the Bible.
The Spirit will not teach us by special revelation in
dreams, visions, or writing it on the walls of our
homes, but He will take the Word of God & use it to bring
the truth to our understanding. This being true, our
relationship to Him is obviously vital to that teaching
ministry. That truth should also become a part of our
prayer when we come to study the Bible.


– The Leading of the Holy Spirit.
• This is another way of looking at the basic truth noted
above. However, I think there may be another facet of
meaning. The HS uses the Word of God to teach us, but
He may use the Word plus other things—other
people, sermons, circumstances, education, dreams, visi
ons, or many other things—to guide us, or lead us into an
understanding of the will of God in our lives.
• Ro 8:14 — ―… because those who are led by the Spirit of
God are sons of God.‖
• ―Ang lahat ng pinapatnubayan ng Espiritu ng Diyos ay
mga anak ng Diyos.‖
