Using Music to Improve Reading Comprehension By Crystal Severson NNU Graduate Student May, 2011
How many readers struggle? In 2007, 66% of fourth graders were at the basic level of national achievement tests. (Digest of Education Statistics).
How can music help? Research shows that music may help readers differentiate sounds in words, improving phonemic awareness. (Sousa, 2006).
What kind of music helps? Rate of music selection is important. Music can relax us or stimulate brain activity. Prior exposure to music can be critical to the way a person reacts to music.
Critical Factors Students may be distracted by music with lyrics. Girls may be distracted by music while boys may have a better ability to focus with background music. Students with attention issues may vary in their response to the music.
Measuring Results This study will measure results by comparing 3 rd quarter comprehension scores (without music) to 4 th quarter scores (with music). The results will be analyzed using a t-test and displayed by utilizing a histogram.
Preliminary Results So far, the boys have asked for the music when reading time comes. No girls have yet asked for the music. Data collection is ongoing.
Possible Findings Boys may derive the most benefit from listening to classical music during reading times.
Recommendations for Future Studies This study had a small sample size of only 23 students. Recommend a much larger sample base to accurately analyze data.
Exciting Possibilities Music can add a whole new dimension to reading intervention. Music is inexpensive for schools to implement.
