Soil and its Importance
Soil
Soil manly made up of:
Mixture of minerals
Small or big rock particles
Clay
Water
Organic matter
Soil
All type of the plants and trees are grow on this
layer of the earth
Plants are the main source of food for living
things .
Components of soil
Organic matters
Organic matter consists of the remains of dead
and decaying plants and animals.
Components of soil
Air and Water
Components of soil
Microorganisms and small animals
Bacteria
Fungi
Algae
Protozoa
Important function of soil
Soil stores minerals
Soil contains various minerals that act as nutrients for plants and
microorganisms
Store of water. Soil consists of particles and pores and these
pores can be filled with air and water
These pores varies in different soil
Those pores filtered and purified the surface water after entered
in the ground.
Soil works as a physical strainer (filter), a biochemical renovator
and biological recycler for all the wastes water passing through it.
Important function of soil
Soil acts as a Habitat for many types of living organisms
 soil is the habitat of both Macro and Microorganisms. Like,
worms, rodents and insects.
 Microorganisms include; Bacteria, Fungi, Algae &
Protozoa etc.
These all are very important
Soil is the medium for plant growth
Soil is the medium that fulfills all the requirements of
a plant for its growth.
Give mechanical support to the plant
Plants stand erect in the soil by its routs.
Supply nutrients
• Some soil
organisms, like
earthworms, mix
the soil and make
spaces in it for air
and water.
• Other soil
organisms make
humus, which
makes soil fertile.
Importance of Living organisms in Soil
Soil
Inorganic minerals
Organic minerals
• Magnesium
• Sodium
• Potassium
• Iron
• Aluminum
• Sulphur
• Chlorine
Organic minerals
are derived from
the remains of
decaying plants
and animals
