Sowing time: 2nd week of November Sowing Depth: Dig a trench of 6-8-inch-deep. Method of Sowing: For sowing, use tractor operated semi-automatic or automatic planter. Spacing: Spacing of (45 to 60) cm x (15 to 25) cm, according to the variety and the size of tuber Water management: 1st:2-3 DAP. 2nd: 30-35 DAP. Stop irrigation 10- 12days before harvesting. Soil: Loamy and sandy loam soils, rich in organic matter with good drainage and aeration are most suitable for cultivation of potato crop. soil with pH range of 5.2-6.4 is considered to be ideal. Climate: The vegetative growth of the plant is best at a temperature of 24°C while tuber development is favoured at 20°C. Rainfall requirement is 300-500mm. Seed Rate: About 3000 – 3500 kg/ha of seeds is required. Seed Treatment: To avoid fungal infection the potato seed tubers are treated with mixture of 1 kg mancozeb + 5 kg natural talk powder or wood ash as dry treatment. Nutrient management: 25-30 t/ha well decomposed organic manure, 1-ton caster cake at land preparation; N(275kg/ha) :P(138kg/ha): K(275kg/ha) Earthing up: It should be done when plant attained height of 15-20 cm. It can be done manually with hoe or mould board plough porridge for large areas. Furrows are opened at distance 50-60 cm before planting. The whole or cut tubers are planted 15-20 cm apart on the centre of the ridge at a depth of 5-7 cm in line sowing method. Weed Control: Apply Metribuzin 70 WP @ 200 gm per acre or Alachlor @ 2 ltr per Acre before sprouts emergence.

Slow rate of degeneration. B. Justification (Location advantage).: As a short duration cash crop, potato is highly amenable to adjustment, fits well in various cropping system and is most suited in different agro-ecological condition of Howrah district (my location). The crop will play an important role to cope up with the future global food crisis and poverty alleviation. Some corporate industrial and trading organizations or MNCs like Pepsico and Metro Cash and Carry have invested huge capital in the field of potato. For example, the Pepsico Company has invested 6300 billion dollars to collect 72000 tonnes of potato in 2009. They have paid Rs. 8/- per kg of potato to the farmers when the market price for the same product was Rs. 2/kg. High export value in the eastern and south eastern India like Tripura, Assam, Bihar, and Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and parts of Tamilnadu. Moreover, cold storage facilities are here in Tarakeswar, Dhaniakhali, Pursurah, and Arambagh. C.
